Hey, ladies! I'm very confused about what to do with our car registrations, as they expire the end of this month and my DH is leaving soon. So we bought both cars in New Hampshire and registered them there. We then got transferred to Connecticut and now they're expiring. I looked at the CT DMV requirements on their website, but can only find info about newly bought cars. We bought both of them 1.5-2 years ago.
Some questions I have are, does my husband have to renew them or can I? Do we have to pay sales tax again, because that's what the info is making it seem like?
Anyone who's been through this before, I'd appreciate any information you have. Thank you in advance!!
Re: car registration HELP PLEASE!!
Both of our cars are registered in NH and we are stationed in NC. If you go on the DMV website it will give you a list of towns in which you can register them online, our home town wasn't available so my mom went in and registered them and we mailed her a check. For the inspection (I know you didn't ask, but we came across it so I figured I'd share it) the car does NOT have to be registered as long as it is out of state, but as soon as you cross state line you can get pulled over for it.
Obviously, that info only helps if both of your HOR is NH, if it's CT I have no idea!
It will differ from state to state. DH and I are both from VA, and have always had our cars registered there and payed personal property tax there (we were stationed there until about 2 yrs ago). When our registration was about to expire in VA, we went to the base legal office and got a form to take to the DMV for each car. For DHs car (solely owned by him) he didnt have to pay to the Arizona equivalent of PPT (registration) here. For my car (co-owned by both of us) we payed 50% of the PPT which equaled about 120-130 or so. It may be different for you, but I figured Id share what we experienced.
ETA: I guess I should answer the other questions too...that may help. Im pretty sure that DH needs to be with you. If he is going out of town for an extended period of time, you should prob. have POA anyways, and that usually works. And as far as sales tax--like PP said--you only pay that when you purchase the vehicle BUT you do have to pay personal property tax or some sort of an equivalent each year in most states---based on a percentage of the fair market value of the vehicle. Good luck!
Thank you ladies for all your help!! Especially about the sales tax, I was freaking out about that one, 6% of what you pay for a car is ALOT!! In NH, there's no sales tax on anything, but CT is 6%! I need to get POA in case we have the baby while he's not here, too, so I'll do that just in case.
Thank you again for all your help and sharing your experiences!
