PPD and Breastfeeding HELP!

My doctor diagnosed me with PPD today (situational not hormonal) and got with my pediatrician to see what meds he would reccomend as I am breastfeeding (DD is 11 weeks today). Pediatrician said he would have me quit BF and get on the meds I need, which looks to be prozac. Is this standard? I thought I have read of women BF with certain "safer" meds. I know there is no such thing as a perfect drug. However I would rather continue the BF rather than take meds, I feel selfish for stopping for that reason, when I can just deal.

Re: PPD and Breastfeeding HELP!

  • Dr. Hale has done the most research on BF and medications.  I would either take a look at this website or call a good LC.  If they don't know call another one.  They should be able to help you.  Your pedi may not truly believe in BF or be completely on board and that is a reason they will tell you to just quit.  I do agree that mommy has to be healthy in order for baby to be healthy but I would try my best to do both things if it were me.

  • What situational PPD?

For what its worth I was on Lexapro throughout my whole pregnacy and my dosages has been increased since giving birth because of PPD. My doctors and LC's have said this medication is safe to take while breastfeeding.

  • Oh. They also told me that Zoloft is a safe one to take as well.
  • My doctor and I discussed this prior to DS #2 being born (I'm pretty sure I had PPD after DS #1).  Our plan was to put me on Zoloft if I felt that I was headed down that road again.  He said it was completely safe to take while breastfeeding.

  • I'm on 100mg of Zoloft a day and I BF.  I'm not sure why your dr. would say you'd have to stop BFing.

  • You need to involve a good lactation consultant in this discussion too.  There is NO reason you should have to stop BFing to go on meds.  I took prozac through my entire pregnancy and afterwards for several weeks before switching back to Lexapro.

Do some serious research on your own before you stop BFing if that is your goal to continue.

  • This would be the least of my concerns.
