Hey there guys, obviously each base/branch is probably a little different on this BUT...Were stationed at Luke AFB in Phoenix. Im currently almost 24 wks pregnant and the OB has mentioned referring me to a chiropracter to help with the back pain/sciatica. The base DOES have a chiropracter but Im wondering whether they will work on me while Im pregnant there. Id really like to go off base, but obviously I'll take what Tricare will approve (if they approve it). Anyone else see a chiropracter during the prgnancy and it was covered? TIA

Re: Chiropracter during pregnancy?
I worked at a chiropractic office all through my pregnancy!
Definitely see one. It helped my back pain tremendously, and it's perfectly safe for pregnancy. Do make sure, though, that the one you see is trained in prenatal adjustments. Some of them aren't.
That said, TriCare doesn't normally cover chiropractic, but I'm unsure about a referral to an on base provider. That might be different?
Even if you're not covered, a once a week visit is worth the cost, in my opinion. Just make sure you find one you're comfortable with. I dealt with a lot of them who were...let's just say...slightly less mainstream then I would have preferred=)
I called referral management on base today and asked them. They said that they do see all patients at the chiropracter on base--I just need to get a referral from my PCP. BUT she wasnt sure whether they were trained prenatally. She said that if they werent trained (and hence could not accomodate me) they would have to refer me off base. May or may not be true...you never know. Id hate to get my hopes up. But I just need to get in with my PCP first...
Also--just curious--anyone know what it costs out of pocket to see a chiropracter?
I'm in CA and pay $40 per visit. My mom is a chiropractor in IL and charges $38 or something like that, which is the same amount the insurance company would give her anyway. That price does not include x-rays or other exams that might need to be done, but if you haven't had any car accidents or specific injuries, you might not need those.
Good luck! Chiropractors are just like any other service, they can be hit and miss, so don't be discouraged if you don't like the first one you go to.
They can't do x-rays anyway of you are pregnant.
OP - I saw a chiropractor for the second half of my pregnancy and I recommend it. It really helped and I still go once a week. I used my FSA to pay for it though since Tricare doesn't cover it. I went 3/week for a month and then I did every other week until the last month when I went every week.
