I cannot figure these girls out

Sometimes they want to eat every three hours, on the dot, and to try to get them to go a little bit longer results in a way too stressed out mom and dad. But last night they ate at 9:00, then again at 3:30 a.m., and they're still sleeping in their cribs almost 6 hours later. Not that I'm complaining about the longer sleep periods and therefore more sleep for us (especially since I go back to work next week) but I am dying for them to start developing some sort of schedule that I can count on.

Re: I cannot figure these girls out

  • Sounds to me like they're getting on a pretty good schedule to me. My girls started this exact same routine on their way towards STTN. My girls still eat pretty much every 3 hours on the dot during the day, but usually sleep from 9pm to 7-8am. If they eat enough and get enough calories during the day, then they won't require feedings during the night. By the time my girls were 8 weeks old, they were taking 5oz at a time and sleeping 10pm to 6am usually. Now we do 6-7oz per feeding (usually 5 times per day) and one fruit or veggie in the evening. If they are getting the right amount of calories during the day, they won't be as hungry during the night. Good Luck!

  • That makes a lot of sense and i didn't ever think about it that way. Our doctor said that we should be moving toward every 4 hour feedings so I've been so focused on trying to do that that I think I'm too focused on the daytime stuff and not appreciating that it might mean easier nights. Thanks for the perspective. =)
  • When we would space out the boys' feedings we would start by feeding them 30 minutes later than their normal time and add half an ounce to an ounce more in their bottles.  Once they were used to the new time, we would do the same thing again.

It worked great for us.  The boys weren't too terribly fussy when it was time to eat and they were pretty hungry so they would eat their normal amount plus the extra I put in and sometimes more.

  • I was just going to post an SOS about helping me figure out a schedule.  Happy to hear I'm not alone!

The exact same thing is happening to us with our 8 week old boys.  3 hours EXACTLY.  They slept from 9-3 and 3:30-7:45 once this weekend, and I thought we had a big breakthrough.  We were back to 3 hours last night, but I'm hopeful that if they can do it once, they can do it again.

Good luck to us all about this schedule business.  It's enough to make a mom nuts, isn't it?
