I just wanted to let you all know that the idea I found on many websites for telling your family and/or friends might not work as well as they say (though I'm sure it would never be horrible).
I read about an idea where you tell everyone you want a group picture, then when they line up whoever is taking the picture says "Say ____'s pregnant!" instead of "Say Cheese!". The point is that you get everyone's first reaction on a photo. I did this to my family last night and no one made a reaction at first, so the photo was just a normal family photo. I'm not complaining because it was actually really funny that no one reacted at first and we'll laugh about that for months to come, but I just wanted to let others know that despite how often this idea is seen on websites, don't get your hopes up too high that you'll get awesome reactions out of people, because you may not. ![]()
Oh, and just to clarify, after the photo was done, my stepmom said "are you serious?" and when my DH said "yes" there was a lot of jumping and screaming and laughing--so even if the photo with reactions doesn't work out, it can still be a good way to tell people.
Re: FYI! Idea for Telling the Fam
we did that with first pregnancy. Everyone just looks confused in the pic. It totally did NOT capture my mom saying "really?" over and over.
So we did it again this time. (they shockingly didn't see it coming) This time I had my DH ready with a video camera too. Much better. Plus this time their reactions came out great - much more excited looking instead of confused.

That's what we are going to do. We're going to set up a video camera and say it...and then pretend we accidentally didn't switch to camera mode. Or we'll set up both cameras. Our video and still picture cameras. Not sure yet. I also just had the idea of decorating our coffee table. It's the kind from IKEA with the glass top and you can fill the table with different things. I was thinking of putting something like "Baby R - Coming May 2011" Or getting Grandma-to-be and Grandpa-to-be shirts and putting them in there with the ultrasound picture we'll get 4 days before.
My IL's are coming from MN in Oct. I'll have a video camera set up so as they come in the house as they unpack their car, I'll get their reactions on tape. They won't know it
I'll have an hours with of tape. Since we'll be outside helping get stuff from the car, we won't be up there to see their reaction. I'm sure my FIL will see it...make a face...and then sneak out as if he didn't see it and let my MIL find it herself
That'll be fun!!
