Decongestant while pregnant?

The list my dr gave me doesn't actually list decongestants on it, like Clartin D or whatever, so I am still waiting for them to call me back from this morning!

Can you tell me what you took or your dr recommended as a decongestant while pregnant? I have been sick since Friday which has sucked! First it was tons of sinus drainage with a sore throat but it's now turned into nasal congestant and a slight cough (from the drainage I still have). Granted I feel better today than I have the past four days but I think I need something to help kick this out of my system! I have been taking just straight Clartin since Friday.

Thank you!!

Re: Decongestant while pregnant?

  • Here is what is on my Ob/gyns Web site:

Sudafed or Sinus Tylenol, Robitussin (Plain or DM) for cough, and Sucrets or Chloraseptic Lozenges for sore throat associated with allergies or a cold.

I had an ongoing sinus infection the last month of my pregnancy, so I feel your pain. I hope you feel better soon!

Dx: PCOS and short luteal phase
18 cycles (3 with our RE) - Metformin + Clomid + HCG booster did the trick!

  • I remember putting a towel over my head and sitting above a boiling pot of water.  Helped my nostrils get a little relief with no meds.
  • Have you tried using a Netti Pot to help with your congestion?

Benadryl, Sudafed, and Claritin are all safe to use.  I would stay away from the "D" meds since those can mess with your blood pressure.

  • You can check out SafeFetus, this site has great information on all medication classifications.

I second the nettie pot, though. Also, eucalyptus in hot water with a towel over your head... or you can do my grandma's recipe:

boil one whole onion in 3 cups of water for 20 minutes. Squeeze the onion when removing it from the water to get all the 'good stuff' out of it and into the water. Add 3 tbsp honey, 1 tsp cayenne pepper, 1 tsp crushed garlic... drink.

Chase it with food or you will throw up.

This, according to her, is her failsafe for getting rid of sinus infections, sore throat and stuffiness...  You would not believe how many times in my childhood I have walked into her home to smell this cooking - blech, but it must work if she did it all these years. I only used it once, and, although my cold was gone within, LITERALLY, hours of drinking it, I don't know if it was coincidence or a result of her brew. :)

  • Thanks for the advice everyone! I have been such an advocate of not taking meds during this pregnancy, I had to break down and take Clartin and one tylenol per day (antihistamine only) because I was so sick on Friday and Saturday. I was scared of taking them because I don't want anything to affect my LO!

I think I am going to opt out of taking a decongestant...I hope this passes in the next few days :) I may try that home remedy f(thanks SageBeginnings)  or the Nettipot the other posters suggested!
