I'm having troubles viewing the article, but I saw a news item a while back that basically said the research that linked autism and vaccines was pretty much garbage. I haven't done any further reading or research and don't really have an opinion at this point. I will definitely learn more before making a choice for my child.
bfp#4 3/19/2014 edd 12/1/2014 please let this be the one!
I think that a lot of different things have to happen for a child to have Autism. I believe it's a mix of genetics and environmental factors, and every child is different.
That being said my daughter was 15 mos old when she stopped progressing. She didn't lose any words or skills, it was as if someone had hit a pause button in her development. It happend right after she spiked a fever of 104 after recieving 3 combo shots at her pediatricians (not including the MMR.) While her speech and special instruction therapist's belived she was on the spectrum, lots of trips to a neurologist and pediatric specialist proved that she had a speech processing disorder (that she was probably born with.)
I DO believe the fever she had triggered the disorder, only because up until that point she had developed completely normally, even a little a head in certain things like speech and repetion.
Ever since then we never get more than one vaccination at a time. We wait 2-4 weeks between each one, and at this point she is completely up to date. She hasn't had any side effects or fevers from any of her vaccines (including the MMR and the Flu vaccines (which do contain a small amout of thimerisol (flu.)
She is also a normal 3 year old, at this point you would never know she had a problem.
There is no scientific link between autism and vaccines, there have been numerous studies by several different health organizations and all of them have came to the same conclusion. I remember an article that was written about 7 years ago about a mother who had refused vaccination for her two boys because she was afraid of the "possible link" to autism, one of her boys ended up being diagnosed with autism anyway and she apparently enrolled him in a program for special needs children, while there he ended up contracting measles, both him and his brother died of brain damage caused by measles encephalitis. Now that mother is an activist for vaccination programs and works closely trying to educate parents about the dangers of choosing not to vaccinate when there is no scientific proof not to do so.
I will have to try and find the article, I remember reading it during nursing school, it was very sad but it was also very eye-opening.

I totally agree with this.
Dh and I talked about this point a few weeks ago. We agreed that it would be best if we didn't do all vaccinations at one time. We don't think it's healthy to overload our childs system with too many things to fight off at one time. Even though this might be perfectly fine according to research it's just not something that we feel 100% comfortable with. I'm sure it'll be hard on me to see my baby get stuck that many times instead of getting it all over with at once, but if something were to happen I don't want to wonder "what if".

This is what we plan on doing with our baby. I am not doing this b/c of autism, since this link has been debunked. I just don't think that a baby's little immune system is meant to be able to handle more than one vaccine at a time. JMHO.

No one knows exactly what causes autism, but if it was vaccines, wouldn't everybody have it? Almost everyone gets vaccines, so I don't know. I read something that linked dopplers to autism. I guess people will believe what they want.
Someone made a good point to me last year about this issue though. Some babies/children are too weak to get vaccines. The kids that could get vaccines and chose not to may catch the illness and spread it to the kid who could die from the disease. If I were on the fence about whether to vaccinate or not, that would be enough to sway me.

As a teacher I have my own thoughts about this. I do NOT believe that the vaccines cause it. There's too many good research articles out there that say it doesn't.
But I also see this issue with children grow and grow every year as the number of children in my school with Autism gets bigger and bigger. Something we are doing with our children has got to be affecting the disorder. What it could be I have no clue and couldn't even begin to say as I'm not a scientist. But I do not believe it is the vaccines.
I do like the other idea of PP is one shot at a time and will do this with my own child.
I don't believe that vaccines cause Autism...I just think we've gotten better at diagnosing it. That being said, every parent has to make that decision. I am having my child vaccinated...I don't believe the risk of pertussis, diphtheria, or encephalitis from a chicken-pox induced fever are more preferable than a debate over Autism. And people always say, "Well, when is the last time you heard of anyone having those things?" Just keep in mind...no disease that was ever discovered has been eradicated.
This came from my company's website...I think it's a great analogy.
Immunizations:
One of the more frequently asked questions by parents concerns
vaccinations. A recent news article in the Knoxville News Sentinel
highlighted the debate over vaccinations and their safety. Since
nothing in life comes without some form of risk the benefits afforded
must outweigh the potential harm. It is the firm belief of Trinity
Medical Associates physicians that vaccines do not unnecessarily
increase the risk of harm and have a tremendous impact in preventing
disease and protecting children from death and permanent disability.
We feel that the protection afforded by the vaccinations is worth the
minimal risk of harm from the vaccination.
One analogy to this risk would be infant car seats. For the first
year of life children are required to be strapped into a five point
harness in the back seat facing backwards. In almost every car
accident scenario this is by far the safest position. However, if one
were to be driving across a bridge, lose control, and careen over the
edge into the water below, then the most dangerous spot in the car
would be the infant car seat. If we knew that on a particular day this
accident was going to happen then any of us as parents would not use
the car seat. In reality though we do not know, and truthfully cannot
know, when this may happen. So we have to prepare for the most likely
car accident and how to protect our children in that situation.
The same is true for vaccinations. In almost every scenario the
more risky venture is to remain unvaccinated than to chance the small
risk of adverse side effects from a vaccination. If we know ahead of
time of a child's health problem that may be exacerbated by a
vaccination then we would not attempt that vaccination. For instance,
those allergic to eggs cannot receive certain vaccinations. However,
every other vaccination should and would be needed still. Even so the
link between vaccinations and developmental delay or autism is
unfounded. There is no credible evidence to warrant this concern. The
easiest evidence to the contrary remains in comparing autism rates from
countries with very low vaccinations rates. Many European countries
have much lower vaccination rates but report identical autism rates as
the United States.
As pediatricians and family doctors we spend an enormous amount of
time and energy attempting to help parents guide their children into
healthy adulthood. We counsel on literally hundreds of illnesses,
concerns, symptoms, and fears of parents. Very few of these concerns
compare in severity or risk of injury to remaining unvaccinated. In
that setting we have found that parents who distrust our advice on
receiving vaccinations in the end also distrust our advice on so many
other issues that carry so much less risk of injury. To that end we
advocate vaccination according the national guidelines except in cases
that have a true medical contraindication. If parents feel that is not
acceptable or wish to decline those vaccinations we advise parents to
seek other healthcare providers that share their viewpoint.

If I understand this correctly, if a parent chooses to not give any vaccine, including the chickenpox vaccine your company will refuse treatment and make them find another healthcare provider?

I can't speak for her company, but there are alot of healthcare providers with the same philosophy. It puts others at risk to have a child that is not immunized in a close environment.
I will probablly do one shot at a time. I can't remember where I read this but it takes the body upto the first 8 years to develop the immune system. Why doesn't anyone talk about this and no vaccines til then?? Then maybe less will be needed anyways,, but BIG Pharma probably doesn't want that information to be released anyways.

Before your child is 8 years old, do they ever come into contact with other children or people who may be sick? Ever? That's why you vax before 8 years old. Kids start school at 5, or pre-k at 4. In case you don't remember, lots and lots of kids are at schools, some of them are sick.
I too haven't read much that's convincing that links the shots with autism. However, I did recently read an article that brought up the idea of hormones. One theory was that with the amount of labors that are now induced and the increased use of pitocin, the laboring mom makes and shares with the baby far less oxytocin at birth. Because oxytocin is a hormone that is associated with bonding and interactions, there is research being done to see if this may be one cause of autism. The study went on to mention how babies and young children who were identifed as being on the spectrum are better able to have interactions, eye contact, conversations, and bonding moments for at least a half an hour or more after inhaling doses of oxytocin.
Did make me think. Does make me want to wait it out for this baby and not be forced into planning a scheduled l&d. My baby brother was almost a month late and no one forced/suggested my mom to deliver earlier; I do believe babies know when they're ready to come.
