Worst mom ever.....rolled

off the couch!!!  Yeah, I told myself I would never leave him unattended - we got back from the Dr. and the mall and poor DS was exhausted so we went up stairs to do his nap routine (lay on couch, watch glow worm, read a book, and then crib).  Well, his diaper was full so I was like while he is watching the glow worm I'll run in his room to get a diaper - as soon as I get to the diaper I hear a thump!!!  He had rolled off the couch onto the carpeted floors!! I feel like the worst mom ever!!  I guess I'm lucky that I've gone this long without a fall!!!

  • They are quick aren't they!  Just when you think they wont go anywhere, they do.

The thing is I should know better...he is rolling/crawling every where....I feel super guilty and worried because now he is napping ( i know he is super tired) but is it an old wives tale that they shouldnt nap after a head injury?

Letting him go to sleep is fine. What you worry about is excessive sleepiness, so if he's sleeping longer/more than usual then you might want to wake him to be sure he's acts appropriate.  The tricky thing is that a lot of times kids will be sleepy after an injury because of the adrenaline rush after the injury. If he didn't have vomiting or loss of consciousness, it would be rare for a child to have a true head injury after a fall from the couch onto carpeted floor.

It happens to even the best of parents. Don't beat yourself up over it :)

  • I did it once too.  I left her sitting on the couch and my friend and her LO were sitting on the floor about 2 feet in front of her so I thought "hey I can go rinse this binkie and be back before she will even notice."  And felt ok as that another adult was *right* there but as soon as I turned the water on Thump!  I felt horrible, my friend felt bad, we all cried.  I had forgotten all about it until read this post.  ((((hugs))))
  • He's up from his nap and drank his bottle fine and is now playing.  But there is a lovely scratch on his eyelid but pretty sure that was there at the Dr.'s office today (probably from rubbing his eyes from being tired) and has nothing to do with the fall!
  • It happens to all of us!!  Ellie crawled right off the bed while I was watching her!  lol.  It was horrible at the time, but she was totally fine.  I'm glad he's ok!
  • Poor Clark!  I'm sure he's fine.  It happens to the best of parents.  Claire rolled right down our two front stairs entering our living room the other day.  She cried for a minute, but was totally fine.
  • The SAME exact thing happened to me. I ran to get a diaper and sure enough, just a second after leaving her, thump. Don't beat yourself up about it. It has happened to many of us.
