normal transition?

My girls just started at a new dcp today...they have been with a sitter for the past year...and they have been crying almost all day so far at the new place... How long can I expect this to last? How long do kids usually take to transition? I am sitting here at my desk crying b/c I know they are there crying and it makes me feel awful...a week? longer?? ugh. I don't know why I thought this would be easy.

Re: normal transition?

  • I haven't been through a crying transition, but have whitnessed other kids crying as they transition. I'd say it takes about a week. Talk with the provider and see if they have any advice for you or can tell you how they comfort the kids. Give suggestions for what you do to comfort them. Maybe bring a blanket in that smells like you, have a special place they can go to look at your picture when they miss you, draw a heart on their hands so they have you with them when you are away or something? It's so hard on everyone, but eventually it all works out. Hang in there!

  • It took my son about 2 weeks to adjust. The first was awful. He wasn't sleeping well or at all, which just meant he was even more upset and it was a snowball effect. It's been 2 months and now he's doing great. Friday when I picked him up he wanted to just stay and play.

I think it's hard at this age b/c they're very aware of changes and surroundings, but they're not old enough for you to explain what's going on. It will get easier! Now, we're seeing a lot of advantages we're weren't even expecting. GL! I hope the transition goes quickly.
