"Lap Child" question....checking strollers

We're leaving Saturday to fly to NC. Since DS is a lap baby, the said his carseat could be gate checked for free under my name (he's on my ticket). But they said we could either check the carseat OR the stroller. Not both. Does this seem right? We're flying US Airways. I really want to bring the stroller and not carry DS all through a bunch of airports but I don't want to have to pay an nextra $25 bag fee. What was your experience?

    That's odd, because I was able to check both of them when I traveled by myself with Charlie. What airline?

    No, that doesn't seem right, but I guess it could be US Air's policy.  We flew Southwest this summer and they allowed you to swap out one of your 2 carry-on items for up to 2 gate-checked baby item - stroller, carseat, pack-n-play, etc.

    The stroller is definitely a necessity in the airport! It would be a pain to have to carry him throughout the entire airport.

    We've never encountered that. I doubt they'd enforce it at the gate, but maybe you could see if you can check the carseat for free with your luggage (most airlines allow this) and then gate-check the stroller.

    I was strongly cautioned against checking the carseat with our luggage.  Unless you have some kind of protective carrier for it, it will get banged around and possibly damaged in the loading/unloading process.  Plus...what if they lose it?  I didn't want to risk not having a carseat after our flight!

    We've always gate checked both but we fly Delta (I never wanted to check our carseat with all our luggage b/c I was afraid I wouldn't get it back in one piece!!)  Anyway, I would probably double check the airline's website to see if you can find anything on there and print it out to bring with you just in case.  I found on Delta's website that they don't charge you for children's carseats b/c it's a "necces travel item for them"....well, we get up to check all our luggage and the attendent tried charging me for it as checked luggage (she assumed we we checking it then rather than at the gate)...but I pulled out my paper to show her and man, did she feel dumb...so I now question if all the employees ever fully know all the rules/regulations.

    We've flown US Airways before and gate checked the car seat and the stroller. Never ever hold check the car seat.

    Cool - thanks ladies. I think I'll call today at lunch and print some info off their website. We planned on gate checking the carseat and I really want to bring an umbrella stroller so hopefully they'll let us gate check that too. There is just to way I'm lugging DS around the airports. Dude, he's heavy!

    We gate checked the carseat and stroller on Allegiant with no problems.

    We just flew Delta to and from Boston (landed today).  We checked the carseat before security for free.  We then checked the stroller plane side for free.
