Can your 3 1/2 yr old color in the lines?

DS is really good at coloring and LOVES it. I never thought anything of it (thought it was normal at this age) until DS's teacher told me how impressed she was with his coloring. I helped out in his class on Thursday and saw firsthand that not a single other kid in his class even ATTEMPTS to stay in the lines. So, just out of curiosity, does your 3 1/2 yr old color in the lines?

  • Hell no, he's still in the scribbling stage. But then we don't get out the crayons very often.

  • Nope - but he has zero interest in coloring books. He likes art a lot and doing projects/drawing on his easel, but is still very "abstract" LOL. I wish he would be interested in coloring books - would make airplanes and restaurants a lot easier.

  • my dd is 4 1/2 and just scribbles over the page to appease me.  she does not care for coloring.  there were a few color by number pages she brought home from preschool last year where she scribbled in the lines... over the number.  lol.  it's not her thing.

my soon to be 3 y/o was actually trying to stay in the lines a couple of weeks ago. I was shocked!

it's pretty tough to do when you're 3.  you should be impressed!  my mom taught prek (4y/os) and many of her kids could not at the start of the year.

  • Yes, she gets the idea of coloring in the lines, but she's not very good at staying in them, yet.  She colors each object one color, so if there is a monkey wearing a hat, the monkey (entire thing) is one color and the hat is another, for example.  But she wouldn't color something tiny like the monkey's tongue a different color, you know?
  • yep! she is getting actually good at it!
  • My DD loooves to color and does a really good job.  We entered a coloring page into the county fair and she got a blue ribbon.  :)
  • Mine does not, but he doesn't really like to color. He loves painting and drawing though. He can paint rainbows and draw people pretty well :) I think it depends on how interested the kid is. My friend's little girl isn't quite 3 (day after K actually) and she attempts to stay in the lines and does a pretty good job.
  • Yes, she did at 3 1/2 but she loves to color and draw....she does it all day long!
  • nope. he has no interest. I remember back to grade school and all the boys sucked at coloring and writing neatly.  I always thought girls were better at that kind of stuff.  DS starts preschool tomorrow so we'll see if it changes and he likes to color more.

  • She always colors in the lines, but is what I like to call creative with color. Faces are always blue or purple.
  • Nope. Not even close.

  • Yes she did at that age. I had some people point it out to me, and I didn't think anything of it either.

  • Yeah, for the most part. She loves to color. I noticed it was kind of like an overnight type of thing. She literally went from one day just scribbling to the next staying in between the lines. She's all over the place with her colors though. It's interesting to see how / what colors she chooses and how she uses them. I say she's just artistic LOL
