It's totally up to you. I've heard most ppl switching to a toddler bed around 18 months. I am going to hold off as long as possible b/c I like DD being contained
But if we were expecting #2 I would probably start the transition to a toddler bed just to save the $ since it's about time to move DD into a toddler bed anyways.
Congrats on the new pregnancy!! I hope it all goes well for you And GL with the bed switching!
We had DD#1 sleep in her pNp bassinet in our room til about 5 months, and plan on the same for DD#2. We'll play it by ear and see where we're at down the road and when we make the switch with DD#2. If we need a 2nd crib, we'll get another - but if DD#1 is ready for a toddler bed then we'll buy one and transition her and put DD#2 in the crib DD#1 is currently in.
We switched DD to regular full-sized bed at two exactly. It was 3 months before DS was due. It was enough time for the transition. I would have kept her in her crib longer if we didn't need it for DS.
My sister kept her son in the crib until he was 3 and just borrowed a crib from her SIL for the year that there was an overlap of her 2 kids in a crib.
My older daughter flat out refused to go back in her crib one day at 16 months, so we converted it to a toddler bed since we were not yet prepared to buy a twin bed, then got a twin bed 6 weeks before my due date so we could get the crib ready for her younger sister. It worked out really well for us and I'm so glad I didn't have to buy a second crib when they are used for such a short time.
Oh, and if you don't have a toddler bed waiting (and hand-me-down or something) I would not waste the money to buy a separate one. Just go straight to whatever bed you'll use for the kid (we did twin, some people do full and I've heard of a few kids having queen). Kids generally outgrow toddler beds pretty quickly and they're not cheap, so when I was spending the money anyway we went to a twin.
My 20-month-olds are still in cribs; we have no plans to transition them to regular beds any time soon. I've read most people make the switch between age 2 and age 3.

We aren't planning on it, yet.
