Breastfeeding

Baby is choking while nursing ?

A few times in the last couple of days my DS#2 (3.5 weeks) has choked as he is breastfeeding.

I'm guessing that maybe the milk is coming fast / its going down the wrong pipe.  He turns red, unlatches and screams / or is gagging.

Is there anything that I can do to help this issue?

Thanks!!

  • You can try different positions to help him manage the flow - the football hold worked well for us, and side-lying once you can manage it.

  • I was also told to nurse leaning back, with my son "uphill" from me, which would slow the flow down to him.  He'll also get the hang of it eventually!

  • You probably have a fast let down, which is what I have too, (just on one side). I could tell because she woudl pull off and her mouth is full and my nipple is just spraying away. She woudl choke and several times milk has come out her nose and she ends up screaming about it for 10 minutes.

I have done the side lying position (but I'm still trying to get it figured out). Yestrday I had her in cradle hold and once she was securely latched, I stood up and propped myself back onto the couch and brough her on top of my breast, like belly to belly (just to see if it woudl work) and she stayed on and keep on sucking. Also if I get too engorged the let down will be way too harsh so I pump about half an ounce off then nurse her.
