First Appointment - What to expect?

When I have my first appointment (with a brand new doctor) I am curious what I should expect.  Will they just do a normal exam with bloodwork and STD testing?  I will be 6w3d.  I know I can call the office and ask what to expect, but since they're closed, I figured I'd try here first.  My DH is willing to come to any appointment and has the clearance from work to do so, but should I bother with him coming to this one?

  • Every office is different but typically you'll have a ton of bloodwork and have to fill out a really detailed family history.  If you haven't had a pap in a while they'll most likely do that as well.  Some offices do u/s and some don't.  If you do have an u/s, most likely it will be a transvaginal since you are so early in your pregnancy.

  • My first appointment was with a nurse practitioner at 6 weeks. They said I won't see the doctor until I reach 10 weeks. I had bloodwork done, a pelvic exam and a pap smear. DH is going to try to come to all the appointments with me. The way I look at it is - I don't always remember all the information that are dishing out at me so it's nice to have two sets of ears there instead of one (even though its still early). This is a huge step in our lives together, and it's nice to share the experience.
  • Since I had my last pap in April, my appointment involved an u/s, A LOT of bloodwork, and then sitting down with the doctor to discuss what the next eight months would look like in terms of appts, dos and don'ts and how the doctors in the practice divide responsibilities. DH was there the entire time. I go back in a week and a half to discuss my bloodwork results and check the heartbeat.

This exactly. The PAP will be extremely uncomfortable now that your pregnant. You will also pee in a cup and give lots and lots of blood (thats the worst part).

  • sorry, newbie here - just got my BFP this morning and haven't done an intro post yet, BUT...

when you say "lots and lots of bloodwork" what exactly does that mean? One long pull or multiple needles? Because I seriously pass out (I have fallen off the exam tables before) and can't deal with needles at all.... I'm hoping it is at least only one draw.

I may have to ask my doctor about using the lidocaine cream I have for my PCP to take blood with....

I think everybody might be different in this situation. My PAP wasn't fun by any means but I wouldn't say it was extremely uncomfortable. My nurse did warn me that a lot of women spot afterwards because your cervix is so sensitive but I never had any.

Only one needle stick.  They take about 5-6 viles of blood.

With my first pregnancy, I only remember one needle stick--it was normal like any other blood draw.  I have passed out before from that before, too!  I'm good, though, as long as I lie down.

  • Thanks for the info... I pass out even when lying down though.... hopefully my stomach will become a bit stronger over my time being pregnant LOL...

  • I pass out too so they had me lie down. DH held my hand and I drank OJ immediately before and after. It's one stick but it takes a few minutes to fill the tubes. I didn't look but DH said they took 7 or 8 vials. Yikes. Don't worry, though. I'd been dreading the Big Blood Draw since before we even started TTC, but it really wasn't as bad as I expected.
