PCM for newborn on prime... ???

I haven't really looked much into finding a PCM for LO yet. I was planning on using the same one my stepchildren go to, but we have been having some problems with their office lately so we will be changing their's and I need to find one I like for LO as well.

My mom was really worried about finding LO's doctor before I deliver so the Dr. can come do the checkup at the hospital... but I didn't think that was neccessary at the naval hospital...

What is the usual protocal with this? Is there a pediatrician at the hosptial that will come check LO out before I enroll in prime and choose a PCM?? Or do I have to choose the PCM ahead of time?

Any advice, or recommendations on San Diego pediatricians?

Re: PCM for newborn on prime... ???

  • I am on prime ; The hospital i deliver at has their own pediatrician that is already at the hospital. My Pediatrician doesn't go up to the hospital so luckily they have one available. Can you call the hospital and ask if they have one on hand at all times or would they recommend bringing one .

  • If you deliver at a hospital there will be a Dr there to check on your child as soon as it's born. (this may be a pediatrician, neonatalogist or family med DR depending on the hospital and delivery). The hospital is REQUIRED to have a DR there to check on baby to make sure it is ok after delivery. You can ask your hospital what kinds of Dr's they have that deal with newborns post delivery, but they will have someone.

Your babies PCM will be the one who does post delivery checkups once you go home. (month checkups, well checkups, sick visits, ect.) This Dr most likely will not come to the hospital after delivery.

  • The hospital has their own pedi that will check on the baby throughout the whole stay.

Usually the pedi comes in near the end of your stay to check and see where you want the babies info to go. For us at first it was the clinic on post.

You can always just set it up as the general PCM and then change it. The baby is enrolled in Prime for 30 or 60  days automatically( I can't remember exactly), you still have to sign them up for Prime and if you don't they automatically go down to standard.

When we signed up for Prime we change her PCM, but when leaving the hospital, the pedi already had the first app set up for us at the clinic.

That is what i was hoping... that a pedi will be at the hospital to check up on the LO's of course.

But the clinics on post are all full so we have to choose PCM's in the network.

    Thanks for the advice ladies!!

Just to clarify... Prime is what everyone is automatically enrolled in. Standard is the upgrade (why they chose those names is beyond me).

Really? I was automatically enrolled in Standard and had to switch to Prime (the free kind). Idk if one is better than the other except for being free, but that's what they did to me. I could be wrong about the way it works though.

Thats correct, you are automatically in standard as soon as you are enrolled in deers.

You have to actually sign up for prime.

Yeah that's what I thought but I wanted to make sure I was right. Is Standard supposed to be better than Prime? I always thought Prime was better (but then again that's because I consider anything free good haha)

neither is *better*... i think it really depends on the area, and the circumstances. Some places have great military hospitals/clinics, etc... and if that is the case, I would go with prime since it is free, and i am in your camp on that! But if you would rather go to private hospitals, etc than standard may be the better choice. You pay $100 (or is it $150.. i forget) max for the year, and everything else is free as long as its covered.

I thought about opting for standard so i could stay with my original maternity care after DH and I married, but then decided to enroll in prime to make it easier to enroll in deers, tricare etc. And the naval hospital in our area is pretty reputable.

**reminder/ psa: if you switch FROM prime TO standard, you can't enroll in prime for another year. just while we're on the subject!
