fighting swaddle all night but won't sleep without it

Quinn used to sleep at least one 4 hour stretch at night, usually a 5-6 hour stretch, followed by a feeding, and then another 2 hour stretch. The past few nights she's been sleeping for about an hour and then starts struggling against the swaddle, squirming her whole body and grunting until she wakes herself up. The catch is that if she isn't swaddled with arms in, she wakes herself up in about 15-20 minutes.Any suggestions? I'm losing my mind since I wake up every time the grunting and squirming starts.  The Miracle Blanket worked like a charm for the first two nights and then the third night you'd have thought it was a torture device the way she was Houdini-ing all night. I'm getting very frustrated.

Re: fighting swaddle all night but won't sleep without it

  • Wow, it's been a LONG time since I put a little one to bed, but have you tried wrapping her loosely in a blanket?  Having her arms wrapped in may give her the comfort she's looking for - and maybe she won't fight against a tight wrap??  I'm sure any suggestion is welcomed at this point!  I know its rough when they don't sleep well because you don't sleep well.

  • Hayden just didn't like being swaddled- at all, ever.  So we stopped doing it and she slept much better!

  • What about leaving one arm out?  Maybe she won't fight it so much.  Hope you get it figured out soon!
  • Reese is the same way. She struggles & breaks out of a swaddle (no matter how tight I get it), but she won't sleep without being swaddled. We use the Halo Swaddle Sleep Sacks at night. Have you tried those?
  • As PP said, try Halo Sleepsack Swaddles if you haven't yet.  The velcro is really strong!  My LO didn't start breaking loose until nearly 4 months old.  And I loved that the inverted zipper meant that I didn't have to unswaddle him for middle of the night diaper changes.
