Baby Poops, Dairy and BFing?

A has had a number of minor episodes of blood in his stool. It was usually just small flecks of reddish blood here and there, which I thought might be attributed to cracked nipples. Last night, though, his watery poop was actually tinged pink.

I've heard this could be a reaction to dairy in my diet - due to the cow?s milk protein irritating the intestinal lining. Has anyone eliminated dairy while BFing? If so, what changes did you make? I'm thinking of trying it just to see if it helps the little guy out.

I talked with his pedi and am taking him in to check it out on Tuesday. (He said it could also be anal fissures from pooping so much) Thankfully, A's otherwise behaving normally and seems like his regular healthy self. :)

  • DH said it's pretty rare to see this in a BF baby but I'm sure it couldn't hurt to try altering your diet and seeing if it helps. hope he checks out ok at the appt on Tues :)

  • We just went to the pedi on Friday for this same thing (blood in poop)  She figured it was probably just a fissure, but if it keeps happening, then I'd need to eliminate dairy from my diet and switch to a special formula (we feed both ways).  As a Wisconsin girl, eliminating dairy would be so hard for me!  But she said I didn't need to yet, only if it keeps happening.

He's had 3 or 4 bottles of formula this week, which is more than usual. I wonder if that has something to do with it. How is LO doing now?

  • I cut dairy out for a couple of weeks due to Bella being very fussy. I gradually added it back in. In the meantime we also started probiotics so that helped MAJORLY! She never had blood in her stool but her demeanor is what caused me to try to eliminate it. She was just not a happy girl. Once I added it back she was fine but we did continue the probiotics.

He only had blood that one time Friday morning.  Hasn't had it since.....(both fingers crossed!)
