Anyones child have Celiacs Disease?

My DS1 just had a bunch of tests done.  His pedi suspects he may have it due to some odd rashes, vomiting, and some bowel issues he has been having.

How difficult is it to eliminate gluten? How soon did your LO feel better? Anything else you can tell me?

Thanks!

Re: Anyones child have Celiacs Disease?

  • Ds doesn't have celiac, but dh and I don't eat gluten because we feel better when we don't. It's pretty difficult to eliminate it completely because it sneaks in EVERYWHERE. Reality is though, a gluten free diet can be a great diet. We eat tons of fresh meats, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, seafood, eggs, etc. Try to stick to fresh products that are naturally gluten free instead of seeking out tons of "replacement" products since they are typically higher calorie and sugar than the products they meant to replace (eg. gluten free bagel vs. regular bagel). Wait until he comes back positive before eliminating gluten because that can throw off any additional test results. The library is a great place to start if you find that he does have it...ours has tons of books on going gluten free. There are also tons of great blogs (Crockpot 365 is the one that first comes to mind) that cover gluten free recipes. Also, lots of low carb forums will have recipes that are mostly gluten free (as long as you check the individual ingredients to make sure they weren't processed/contain gluten).

Ds is allergic to soy and couldn't eat most processed foods even if we wanted him to so he eats what we eat (fresh foods). He loves all meats, most veggies and lots of fruits and dairy. He's obsessed with nuts, olives, yogurt and blackberries :) He'd rather have any of those over a cracker any day. The hardest part is when he sees other kids eating something at daycare that he can't have and he doesn't understand why at this age.

I imagine you'll find it much easier to go gluten free if your whole house eats that way. Dh and I follow Primal Blueprint (you can get the book on amazon) so our house is pretty much gluten free. It was harder when I was the only one who ate that way but got easier when dh joined me and we could get rid of the other stuff. On the plus side, I feel so much better, have tons more energy and have lost 40 lbs. since switching to primal eating (no gluten, grains of any kind, processed foods or sugars).

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the advice.  I will definitely check out your recommendations.  My mom has gone periods where she has eliminated it and like you she said she felt so much better and also lost a significant amt of weight.  I would be interested how the diet would effect/benefit everyone in my household.  I know I am supposed to continue feeding it but it is hard to do since we suspect it is hurting him.

    Thanks again.

  • I have some info in my bio.  Two of my DDs and I have celiac disease.  The whole thing sucks at first.  But it gets much easier with time.  And there are so many new products available and more and more mainstream products are now labeling their gf products.

I highly recommend getting the books that are listed in my bio.  My sister had them overnighted to me from Amazon and that really helped a lot.

My middle DD was the first one in our family to be diagnosed.  She was 3.  Within days we saw improvement, she was like a different child after a couple of weeks, and after 6 months she was the healthiest we'd ever seen her.  It was amazing to see how many issues were caused by gluten.  We've been gluten-free for over 3 years now.

I really like celiac.com for info.  The forums there are pretty good too.

I'm happy to answer any questions for you!

Great! I checked your blog and will definitely check out those resources. I am going to send you a pm.  I will page you. Thanks.

  • My DS was tested for Celiacs but was negative. However, he is allergic to wheat and he is on an entirely gluten free diet. I just typed of a huge blog post of food ideas as I always seemed to be typing up this info for friends who wound up in this situation. Hopefully some of the info will be useful!
