Military Health Insurance

Hey everyone!

Just wondering how good the military insurance coverage is for childbirth? I am just trying to get a general idea of the range of how much it will cost us out-of pocket after the insurance covers their portion...

Helppp! ;)

Thanks so much!

  • Which plan do you have?
  • Loading the player...
  • Depends on your plan. H is active duty AF and I am on tricare Prime. Everything has been paid for 100% for me. If you are on Standard, you can expect co-pays.

  • I've had Prime, but preferred Standard. I only paid $12.32 for my whole prenatal care and birth. And I had a very complicated delivery.

  • I have Tricare Prime and will pay absolutely nothing for prenatal care or delivery.  Baby is also covered for 30 days without you having to do anything, so if anything needs to be done to baby in the hospital, it is completely covered as well.

  • Tricare Prime = $0 from the initial blood test at 4w through the 6 week post partum check-up.

Not sure yet. We're getting married in November, and he is in the AF Reserves. His regular full time job is a firefighter in the city that we live in, and the health insurance is terrible. We are thinking of going on the AF's health insurance plan, but I was just wanting to get a general idea of what it had cost all of you... I currently have Cigna, but was laid off from my job a little while ago. My severance ends in about two weeks, and my insurance ends along with it. I can do COBRA and keep Cigna, but the montly premium will be ridiculous. Cigna has been awesome so far, but i'm willing to bet the health insurance we can get through the AF will be much, much better....

  • Oh ok, I don't know much about the plans for Reserve service members, sorry!  Hopefully someone here will have some kind of answer for you.  You could also call Tricare and they could give you a specific rundown of what costs you can expect.  They've always been very helpful over the phone for me, and are understanding and nice to talk to.

    Good luck!

  • I have standard but was looking into all the cost & prime is a much better deal if you're pregnant with all delivery/hospital costs and such.  Unfortunately I don't have a regular md so I just found at PCM in family practice and have an appt with her in 2 weeks and she will have to refer me to an OB.  In the meantime, I am filling out the paperwork for tricare prime.

Reserves get Tricare Reserve Select. You have to pay $197.56 a month for a family. And then you have to pay a deductible or 20%...whichever is less. Reserve Select is the same as Tricare Standard. My DH and I had it when he wasn't AGR. I loved it.

  • Hi I'm a lurker here...And I just switched over to Tricare...I have no idea what type of benefits I would be getting.  I was so used to my old health care.  Reading this thread gave me a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel.  DH was just deployed and Tricare is taking it's sweet time accepting my application!

You should have had tricare as soon as you got married.  Did you mean you switched to standard or vice versa?

If youre in the DEERS system, you already have Tricare (aka if you have your spouse MIL ID). They automatically put you in Standard and you have to apply for prime through the Tricare office. The next month it will go into effect, but until then you still have Standard. Go talk to your base Tricare office (typically located in the clinic, but sometimes elsewhere) and tell them you need to apply for standard. You will need your ID and you and your DH's SSN's. (I think thats it but it's been a while since I did this).

GL and please let me know if you have any more ?'s about it. You definitely qualified as soon as you got married (assuming your DH is Active duty, which he is considered that being deployed, even if is isn't Active Duty typically).

True.  I called and just got switched to Standard.  They told me that the only thing that wasn't covered was the co-pays if I was hospitalized (eg. for the birth)...They told me all prenatal visits and care were 100% cov'd.  Seemed like a no-brainer to me since I can NOT STAND our base healthcare.

Exactly. I really love Standard. I love not having to have referrals too.

  • When I had my son I was on Prime. I ended up paying something like $16 for my hospital stay.
  • I was on standard and paid $30.00 for my entire pregnancy. You have a deductible that has to be met each year and depends on rank for E5 it was $150.00. I loved standard because I delivered at a normal civilian hospital and my doctor had a varied schedule for visits. His last appointment was 5:00 so I had more than enough time to get off work and go to my apt so I didn't have to burn up all my sick time or vacation time for apts. The $150.00 deductible and $30.00 co-pay at the hospital was worth every penny.
