Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My 14 mo is obsessed with the toilet

I wasn't going to introduce the potty till he was 18 months. I guess he has been watching his brother use the toilet that now I have to put him on it too or he has a fit. This morning he wanted to get on it and he actually peed. I was really surprised. It was probably coincidence. But now Im wondering if I should start PT? or just follow his lead?

Re: My 14 mo is obsessed with the toilet

  • Our DS got really interested about then as well.  And we were doing a ton of naked time to clear up a rash, so we got a potty seat for him.  He seemed interested, so we stuck him up there, and he sat if he wanted.  He loves sitting there!  Now that he's nearly 2, he goes pee and poop nearly every morning on the potty, and every night before bath he pees.  we make a big deal of telling him we need to pee or poop when we go, and the last few months, especially the last few weeks he's been telling us poop when he needs to use the toilet.  We're not pressuring him, but he's slowly getting the idea.  We're not really PT'ing, we're just following his lead and getting him used to it.  I figure as long as he's not afraid of the toilet, we can't lose!

And both us, and daycare love that he poops every morning in the potty!  less poop to wipe is always a win!

  • My 14 month old is interested too!  Right now I'm just letting her watch me go, talking her through the procedure.  I'm planning to get her her own potty at 18 months, but if she starts wanting to sit there before I'll be all for it!  I'd just follow his lead, it should come naturally.

  • Our 17 month old has been interested in the potty since she was 12 months old.  She has sat on my lap while I 'potty' since she was a little baby.  We read a potty book to her and she LOVED the book and started asking to sit on the potty immediately.  However, she has never peed or pooped on the potty.  She sits there a LOT, but is def. not ready to 'potty train'.  We are happy that she is comfortable with the idea, in general.  At 14 months she started pointing to her diaper each time she peed or pooped during the day.  But, we know she is not capable of 'holding it' or true control.  We are going to continue letting her casually explore using the potty as long as she needs....  we have no idea what we are doing, LOL.  It's good to read about what others are doing.
