Why do people cry when celebs die?

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I never understand why people cry when celebrities die. When Heath Ledger died, I was very sad for him and his family because he was so young and talented and wasted everything on drugs, but I didn't cry. When Michael Jackson died, almost all of my coworkers cried and I just sat there thinking how sad it was but also wondering why everyone was mourning the loss of someone they never met. I am not callous. I cry when people I know die. Anyone want to explain?

  • I can't explain it because I wonder too. Michael Jackson was the worst. People freaked out. I can see if the President dies or something, or John Lennon - if it is really tragic. But in general I don't understand it either.

  • Well ...  I don't know what to tell ya because I cried when Michael Jackson died.

I cried mostly because his life was so tragic and cut so short.  I really feel like he was a good man with a good message.

    Buuut that's just me.

  • I'm with you.. I don't get it either. These people are not 'real' people in their lives.. even if they may have gone to their concerts (musicians) or actually met a celebrity.. they aren't actual friends with them so why is it so emotionally damaging??

Certain deaths are really shocking but not something that would make me cry.

  • I think people cry because even though they don't know the celeb, they feel like they do.  Celebrities are who they are because people feel a connection to them even though they've never met them.

  • I cried while watching Michael Jackson's funeral. His kids were up there and it was just so sad. MJ influenced a lot of people's lives. I can understand why people cried.

If it wasn't for his kids being up there though, I probably wouldn't have cried.

  • I don't get it either. I also cried when MJ's kids spoke. But thats it. I felt their pain as children. I also want to know why everyone on the planet becomes someones greatest fan once they die? People who are devout country music fans, who I have never heard say a word about or listen to MJ on a regular basis, crying and so upset...Maybe its just me. I understand his talent and tragic loss but it definitely isn't something I will cry over and it won't make me buy any CD's I didn't have before.

  • I am with you I just don't get it. It is sad but I never have I cried.

I thought it was so strange when one friend of mine "couldn't come out of the house" for days because she was so sad and crying over Michael Jackson (she took 3 days off work to mourn). All I was thinking was ya its sad but he wasn't your dad or someone that close to you that you couldn't come out of the house....grow up!

  • I don't generally cry when celebs die either, but I've always thought that I might cry when Eddie Vedder dies b/c his music was such a part of my youth/life and I wouldn't be surprised if I cried b/c of the strong association--not crying for him,per se, but crying b/c that he will make no more music, etc is depressing (and b/c it serves as a reminder that I'm getting older???) Anyway, maybe I won't. Guess we'll see.

  • Well I cry at pretty much everything (esp when pregnant).  I could prob watch the funeral of a random stranger and start bawling.
