Anyone else's pedi say this about solids?

We went to DS's 6 month appt today.  We had been waiting until now to start solids.  The pedi gave us an "introduction to solids" form and went over it with us.  She wants us to only give him rice cereal for an entire MONTH.  at 7 months he can start veggies.  At 8 months he can start fruit.

Doesn't this sound kind of conservative? The form is from the Camino Medical Group, so it's not just this particular individual pedi handing this out.

I'm thinking maybe we'll do cereal for a week or two just to get him and his tummy used to "solids" and then jump into veggies.  I don't know.  I just haven't heard of/read about this spacing before.

  • I've heard of that for babies starting solids at 4 months, but since you waited until 6 it does seem conservative to me. We started at 6 months too and mostly followed the guidelines on this chart from wholesomebabyfood.com (awesome resource for food ideas, recipes, etc. BTW).

ETA: I know some people get the baby used to veggies for awhile before introducing fruit so that they develop a taste for veggies and don't just want to eat sweet things, but as far as I know it's not because their bodies are somehow less ready for any fruit before veggies.

  • yes that does seem conservative. At least compared to our Kaiser pedi who gave us the ok for rice cereal at her 4 month appt. She also that if she tolerated the cereal that we could try any of the "stage 1 foods" (like on the chart that Z posted) and instructed to wait a few days between trying something new.

  • At our 6 month (which was actually at 6.5 months) pedi said to feed stage 2 foods.  Do a new one every 5 days or so.  Thicken with rice cereal.  Offer twice a day.

I agree, sounds like yours is talking like your kid's 3-4 months

  • That was the "dogma" for many years, based on the theory that rice cereal is easy to digest, and minimally allergenic, Also it is fortified with iron which is recommended at 6 months for BF babies especially who may be low in iron (theoretically). More "allergenic" foods were delayed as long as possible.

Now things are really changing, the old theories are being challenged by new research that shows there may actually be a "window" during which introducing a specific food may actually lessen the risk for allergy, eg, for oat it seems to be 4-7 months! Which means we may be starting a lot of food late. (unless you have a strong family history of food allergies).

I agree personally with the chart that Zoe posted. We did start with oat cereal then moved on to pears, apricots, and others rather quickly. The fruit and veggie thing is exactly what someone mentioned above, although I don't really think it matters that much at all. again, just a theory.

  • Ditto Zoe!

EJ is a fiend for veggies...it is like pulling teeth to get the kid to eat fruit. I HAVE to add blueberries for him to eat fruit.

Honestly...I don't know that I agree with the veggie first thing because EJ had sweet potatoes and apples as his first non-cereal foods and he didn't like either much. He didn't start letting me feed him solids til he got a taste of green beans...then it was on.  Now all he wants are green beans, asparagus, carrots w/ zucchini, etc.  He tolerates apples w/ blueberries.  We are experimenting with peaches now and he is not so sure about them.

Kid likes strong veggie tastes!  Both DH and I are not big on fruit (I really dislike most fruits) and are hardcore for veggies...so perhaps that influences him?

  • thanks so much, everyone!  At our 4 month appt she told us to wait until 6 months.  The chart she gave me yesterday actually says 4-6 months for rice cereal and she scratched out the "4", so I know she wasn't confused as to how old he is.

I think we'll start with cereal for a little bit just to see how he does and then will jump into other things.   I'm pretty sure DS is ready to try solids - he keeps reaching out for what I'm eating and opening his mouth - we'll see if this is true!

    Thanks again!
