How do you guys soothe your overtired baby?

When DS gets overtired, it is EXTREMELY difficult to get him to relax.  He thrashes around, arches his back, cries, whines, etc.  I try singing, rocking, nursing, paci (even though he refuses everytime, I always try), swaddling, bouncy chair, swing ....   Naps are always a challenge, today especially, so by bedtime he was way overtired.  It took 4 hours to finally get him down for the night.  Any suggestions, other than try to get him to nap better during the day ;)

  • Bouncing/rocking while walking around either singing or loud shushing.

  • I'll use white noise when I've tried everything and nothing is working. The vacuum or hair dryer usually calms him down pretty quickly and then he falls asleep.

  • that sounds like my evening yesterday. it was horrible. she was so overtired that nothing soothed her. she's usually a great napper but she refused to sleep from 5-12. finally she calmed down once i plopped on the couch and turned off all the lights and tv. good luck!

  • I football hold him and then bounce on the exercise ball and sing this stupid song to him about his belly button. Works every time.

  • Take him into a dark space with nothing going on, like a closet.
  • I hold her against my chest and pat her back while saying "shhhh" over and over.
  • We use the "Happiest Baby on the Block" method: tightly swaddled, held on her side, sway side to side while slightly bobbing so her head jiggles and shush louder than her cries.

  • Loud shushing while holding her against my chest, or sometimes we stand in the bathroom with the shower and fan on, lights off. That usually works really quickly.
  • i pat her legs or butt rhythmically while singing a lullaby and dancing. hth

  • We bounce (she always needs to be bounced though), hold her close, and keep the binky in her mouth.  She fights for awhile but it usually only takes her a couple minutes to calm down and then another 15 minutes - hour to actually be knocked out cold.

  • Turn the shower on and hang out in the bathroom.  This puts DS out.   :)  Although it gets old sitting in the bathroom on the toilet in the dark.  lol

But this TOTALLY worked for us with DD until she was 3.5 months.  Every.single.time.  It was our go to every time she was overtired... which was often.  Good luck to you!
