Babies: 3 - 6 Months

What is the rule abt. LO having more than 32 oz of formula in a day?

I just started giving DD formula all of the time minus her middle of the night feeding and a 6am feeding.  So I am able to know that she is eating 20 oz most days at daycare, and about 10 more oz before she goes to bed here. That's 30 oz of formula PLUS the two BF feedings....Isnt't that a lot???

I remember hearing about it being bad if kiddos have more than 32 oz of formula or something? Is that right? What do you know about it? She's awwwwfully to that and certainly taking more than 32 oz if you think about the formula and breast milk combined...

  • My ds gets 36 ounces a day, I've never heard of anything like that being bad.

  • how much does she weigh? I'm pretty sure it always goes by the baby's weight.

  • We recently switched from EBF to FF, and I was confused as well.  My pedi said it's 2.5 times her weight.

My LO was about 14lbs at her last appointment, so pedi said she could have about 35oz a day, but that was the most. She recommended less, like 30oz.

  • I am glad this was asked. My DD was eating almost 36 oz a day before she started teething last week. She has gone down a few oz since then and I was worried about her not eating enough. She takes about 30 a day so that is about where she should be then.

  • Our pedi said over 40 is bad.

  • So funny (and annoying) how pediatricians are all different! Mine said Keegan shouldn't go over 32 ozs (most days he is right around 30). At his 4 month apt he weighed almost 16 pounds.

  • we just started cereal for this exact same reason....2.5x the weight but not over 30-35...everyone says different. some days he got close to 50....ugh(it was at his dads house...so you never know what THOSE ppl were thinking lol) they are still convinced he need 6 oz bottles...and he does fine on 5 here...

  • My LO is 18 pounds and eats between 36-40 oz most days. My pedi said the average is about 35, that all babies are different, and as long as he wasn't spitting it up he was fine. We started doing cereal now, so he is eating only about 32 oz per day.

  • We weren't told it was "bad" per se, but our pedi said that when she was consistently eating 32 or more oz per day that this was when we should start solids because it would be an indication that she was needing/wanting more caloric intake than what Formula was giving her.

32 oz is the max amount for breastmilk. Maybe that is what you are thinking of
