Portable growth chart for our military "brats"?

Growing up, my dad marked our growth in a doorway. Since we will be moving (lots), I'm trying to find a portable growth chart for the boys. I don't like the flimsy hanging ones with cartoon characters. I need something pretty substantial and I'm thinking of just buying yardsticks. Where can you buy yardsticks? Ever seen a really wide one? Anybody sell a decorated yardstick? Decorate it myself? Thanks.

  • You could have one of the paper hanging ones laminated.

Alternatively, yardsticks are usually available at craft and hardware stores.

    Also, check Etsy.

  • I have seen a ton of wooden growth charts on etsy, just type that into the search and plenty will come up.  Most sellers on there will customize it for you too if you want it a specific color or something.

  • We actually had to buy a cabinet/pantry in our last house and we started using that for the boys' growth charts!

A friend of mine made one several years ago from a piece of wood that was about 4 inches wide and 3 feet tall. Fancied it up with ribbons and paint and stencils. It was super cute. But I am not the creative at all.

I think I'm going to make one too now.

  • I've seen cloth growth charts at several baby/kids shops, and Costco even had some at one point (I haven't looked in awhile). I would think that would be even easier to transport from one place to the next because it can roll or fold up. I'm not sure if they would fall under the same category as the flimsy ones you don't like, though, because they do hang up.
  • My brother just made a growth chart for the baby they are expecting.  He made it out of a 2x4 that he bought at Home Depot.  He painted it and my SIL steciled a design and the growth chart onto it.  They did a great job.  You could easily do one for your kids.  The entire project cost my brother $8

This is what we will be doing as well.  I think ones like these are so much cuter!
