Pregnant after a Loss

Procardia for BP????

Ok, when I went to the high risk doctor a month ago, they checked my blood pressure on the stupid automatic blood pressure machine and it was high.(This happens to me everytime they use automatic, if they come back and do it normally, then it is fine.) Well, nurse just rechecked it on automatic machine.  Of course, the high risk doctor added a procardia to what I am already taking.  Have been taking it for a month.

I went to get the meds refilled and the pharmacist wanted to talk to me. She asked me if I was expecting. I told her was, she got the pharmacist.  The pharmacist comes and talks to me and asks me if I was going to ask my doctor to take me off of it.  I told her my high risk doctor was the one that put me on it.  WTH?  Am I the only one on procardia, and should I ask for something else, I already take methadopyl?

Re: Procardia for BP????

  • Procardia is very commonly used in pregnancy - usually more for preterm contractions.  The two main meds for BP are aldomet (alpha methyl dopa) and labetalol.  I was on procardia from 23 weeks for preterm contractions.  Although I am sure the pharmacist meant well, an MFM is certainly more qualified to make the risk/benefit decision.  Perhaps the pharmacist is not very familiar with procardia use in pregnancy.  FWIW, ACOG supports procardia use in pregnancy.  Hope that helps.  When in doubt, call your doctor to talk this over to make you feel better!!

  • I to was on procardia both ob and high risk both agreed on that med at first...it didn't work for me for bp so i ended up on a high dose of labatelol (sp?) like E&R said high risk doctor knows best even if pharmacy had your best interest at heart i'd listen to the high risk doctor over him any day
  • I took Procardia after delivering my son to help control my HBP and still nurse.  When I got pregnant this time and we reviewed all my records at my first MFM visit they assured me that if my BP started creeping up again I would go right back on Procardia.

  • My guess is this was a less experienced pharmacist. She was probably flagged by the computer to ask about this, but you can rest assured that this drug is used plenty in pregnancy - both for BP control and to prevent contractions.

  • Honestly, I didn't second guess my doctors, because I know they know what they're doing.  It kinda made me think, though, since I got them filled last month with no questions.  The other funny from Walgreens was I got my prenatals filled last Saturday and they wanted to consult with me(I take duet duo and it has two pills) so that I knew how to take them.  I told them I had been taking them since December, so I knew how to take them.!
