BEST stretch mark prevention creams??

I was wondering if any 2nd time around moms know of any really good stretch mark creams? I know a lot is hereditary, but I also want to do what I can to prevent them.  I feel like there are soo many on the market, but maybe you would have experience with yourself or family/friends that know of ones that are really good.  Thanks! I want to start now!

Re: BEST stretch mark prevention creams??

  • My OB just laughed when I asked this. He said "use lotion if you want, but it won't really matter. It's all genetic."

    You can't prevent them.

  • I used pure unscented shea butter.  it smells a bit strange, but i'm allergic to perfume.  Not a stretch mark on my belly. I did get one on my boob though but that was after DD was born, I though I was in the clear, but I was wrong. So don't forget your boobs.  There is a genetic factor too though, my mum only got a few small ones.

  • Can't prevent them.  You may even think you've eluded them, like I did, until they showed up at 37 weeks.  Even if you get them, they fade quite a bit with some time.  I think at most the creams might help make them less visible, but won't prevent them.

This.  when I was a naive newb - I got talked into buying some $35 crap at Destination Maternity.   Ha!    I still woke up at 30w with a ton (and I mean a TON) of stretch marks.    They are just now starting to fade - not like it matters now.  LOL!

  • I agree that it is genetic but....it still makes me feel better to use lotions.  If anything, it keeps the skin hydrated Smile  I've heard great things about Bio Oil but I haven't gone out and gotten any yet.  I think it's at Walgreens and runs about $20.  People seem to swear by it.  Anyone here use it?
  • Cant prevent them, they are genetic. But, if you want a good cream that smells good and is not expensive. Try  "Butter Up"  by Soap and Glory. You can get it at Target.

  • I used Curel Pregnancy and Motherhood Creme. I still got a few stretch marks, but I loved that lotion because it was thicker and felt really nice on my stretching skin and kept it hydrated.

If you do get stretch marks, I've heard some good things about Mederma for fading them, but havn't tried it personally.

  • Thanks for the help.  I guess I want to do anything I can do to lessen their appearance.  I have to ask my mom if she had them and how bad... Yikes...

  • I used the Burts Bees stuff last time.  I didn't have any stretch marks and then I went on a trip and forgot the lotion and when I got back it looked like Freddy Krueger went to town on my belly.  I lovingly call them my "Ethan tattoos."

I doubt the lotion was really helping that much, I think it was just the time when my tummy got huge, but I'll use the stuff again...its not going to hurt anything.

  • The lotions just help if the stretch marks are itchy. Just a moisturizer. I wish there was an actual preventative but no such luck :(
