I am 23 yrs old and live in new jersey. I have a daughter who just turned 3 in august and im expecting my second child ( a boy!). He's due dec. 1st. My daughter is excited about her baby brother. I have been a single mother for the last 6 months. My children's father left me because i was pregnant a second time and he doesn't want this baby. Then at 8 weeks i thought i was going to miscarry because of the horrible abdominal pain i was in. Went to the emergency room and had blood work and an ultrasound done and everything had come out fine. The doctor asked me if i was under a lot of stress and i said yes. So he told me to take an easy for a while. After that my pregnancy was good. I found out i was having a boy at 19 weeks pregnant. Then 3 weeks later i had an ultrasound and the doctor asked me if down syndrome runs in my family and i said yes. And i asked her why. She said because the baby has a short nasal bone and that's a sign of down syndrome. I got so upset and scared. She recommended that i have an amnio done and that i needed to have it done the next day because i was so far in my pregnancy already. So i went the next morning and had the amnio done and was told the results would be in between 10 an 14 days. So i waited. A week later after i had the procedure done i got a call from a genetic counselor saying that my dr who did my amnio scheduled me an appointment to see her the next morning. I told the genetic counselor that thr dr who did my amnio said i wouldn't have to see her until the results came back that there was something wrong and that i haven't gotten my results yet and they wouldn't be in for at least another week. so she called my dr to find out what was going on. Then my nurse called me to tell me the same thing the genetic counselor said to me. At this point i was so confused. My nurse called the dr who did the amnio and found out that my results were back already. So i got a call back from my nurse saying that my unborn son doesn't have down syndrome; that he has another type of chromosomal abnormality and the only way for me to know what knid it was, was to go see the genetic counselor. So I cried my eyes out that day wondering what was wrong with my baby. I then agreed to see the genetic counselor the next morning. So when i went she told me that my baby doesn't have down syndrome. That he has something called the xxy syndrome also known as klinefelter syndrome. She explained that it's where he has an extra x chromosome because when the cells were dividing, that extra x chromosome didn't split and go where it should have gone. So when he's older he's going to need therapy and going to need to be taking testosterone when he's about to hit puberty. But he's also not going to learn as quickly as a normal child and he may be taller than he originally would be and that he may not be able to have children because this syndrome causes infertility in most cases.
