What do you give for baby shower gifts?

I have a baby shower for a relative.  usually I get something from the registry or my mom and I will make up a basket of things from registry. But I honestly don't know what to get her.  The registry she made does not have much on it and it is very random things.  I do know that they live in an apartment, so probably won't want big stuff.

Any ideas of what you get people?

  • A Bissell Little Green steam cleaner.

I have been told by many of the recipients that it was the single most usfeul gift that they got for their baby shower. It's not cute, but it's realistic.

  • I usually make a basket with baby medicine in it. I usually include Tylenol, Mylicon, Highlands Teething Tablets, and a few other things. If it is family, and I know the theme of the room I will make them a baby blanket.

  • I like to do "theme" gifts. I went to a baby shower last weekend and did all bath stuff. Got her the Duck Tub, towels, wash clothes, baby wash, lotion, bath toys, etc. I've done the Baby Meds basket before with Tylenol, Mylicon, Teething Tablets, Desitin, etc and have also been known to do an "ages" them where I will get a laundry basket and get one package in each size of diapers, onesies, socks, etc.

  • I think I am going to get my sister a diaper bag and fill it with diaper bag essentials- wipe holder, blanket for changing on, binky strap, snack container, binkies, rash cream, sippy cup, whatever else seems cute at the time.

  • I usually get the bathtub themed gift and fill it with bathtime things.  But the bathtub she registered for is at a store that is out of state and they do not have this store in my state (where the shower is).  I am sure if i get the tub, someone else will get it for her out of state shower.

  • How about some cute useful things? I loved my bumkins bibs. You could get some of those in the Dr. Seuss theme and then the matching board books to go with them, and maybe a cute plate/cup set. The bumkins bibs can be purchased at BRU in smaller or larger sizes.
  • I like to give books.  The girls like to make the new baby a build a bear that kind of goes with the theme of the nursery if possible.

    .
  • I get a diaper caddy or even just a nice lined wicker basket and fill it with baby essentials - wash, lotion, wipes, pacis, changing pad cover, diapers, washcloths, towels, etc - anything they might need by the changing table.
  • I'm getting my sister a video monitor, b/c it's the best thing we've ever bought as far as baby/kid products go.  I also got her a few baby outfits and am going to get some books to start off his library.

My SIL gives a bottle of wine and a box of those test strips you can use to see if your milk is safe after you've been drinking! LOL

  • If you know the name I love to give personalized gifts of a burp cloth, hooded towel, bib and either onesie or some sort of matching outfit with the name of the baby on it. The last set I bought was for my friend's baby. Her nursery theme was jungle animals so I went on etsy.com and found a set of bib, burp cloth, hooded towel and onesie with Benjamin written on it and a different jungle animal embroidered on each. She LOVED it and even got his infant pics taken with the hooded towel and him naked. Soo cute!
  • I get a baby bath, I think it's the comfort touch or something, I loved that thing, and then do up a basket that has towels, wash cloths, soaps, lotions, butt paste, gas drops, nail files/clippers. things like that.
  • I have done this and also miracle blanket.
  • If I go off registry, I stick with diapers, wipes, and books.  You can never have too many of those things.

I'm "new" to posting here -hello everyone!- that is such an interesting gift- why a steam cleaner? Don't get me wrong- I would have invited you if thats what you would have gotten me ;) but is there a specific reason why steam cleaner is your gift of choice?

  • I always get a music toy for the crib....we used that for over 2 years.  It was one of the best things we ever got!  I love the aquarium type with music and fish.  My DS loved his fishies!  Put him to sleep like a charm.

Because as cute as they can be, babies and small kids are messy little creatures. As you can see from this post, there are millions of people who buy bathtubs and medicines and registry stuff. I had craploads of clothes and blankets, some of which never got worn. I don't like giving piles of cutesy, useless junk that they will have to sell or donate later, or can't because it's monogrammed.

I give them something else that I KNOW they will need, and it's been appreciated. I had someone tell me a couple of months ago that it was hands-down the best gift she got. I gave it to her 4 years ago and she's still using it.

That makes sense- the reason I was asking is that I have a 9 month old and I wondered why I would need one but after I posted my question I realized it probably gets used for carpets and sofas when the cute kids throw up all over them, I'm thinking I might need to invest in said item instead of cleaning individual stains by hand w/cleaners.

  • I buy the boring, non-cutesy registry stuff that no one wants to buy (but you really need).

  • I often buy a bunch of classic kid's books. I went to a baby shower last week where the mom is a Spanish teacher so I bought her "Where the Wild Things Are," "Curious George," "Goodnight Moon," etc all in Spanish.

I just went whole hog when I moved in April, and bought slipcovered family room couches. Big Smile I still use the Little Green for carpets and other upholstery (like the car). It gets stuff a lot cleaner than sprays.

9 month olds are still pretty stationary. When they start spilling and using furniture as a napkin, you'll want more than a can of Resolve.

This (I do the same for weddings - no one wants to buy bath mats or random household stuff, but that's typically what people need more than picture frames and candles).

I also often get baby clothes that are bigger sizes, like 6-9m or 12m, either trying to anticipate the season or something that is pretty much seasonless like onesies or sleepers. I got SO much 0-3 and 3-6 clothing and almost nothing else. Some of it I exchanged for larger sizes and my kids wore them later.
