Anyone never have chicken pox?

I never had it and it makes me a bit worried.  I hear chicken pox when pregnant is bad (worse than a container of cream cheese :P). My mom never got it either, she was a carrier, but never got chicken pox. My OB (the idiot ones) ran a blood test to see if I ever had it and didn't know (I didn't think people were that lucky), but they didn't tell me the results, cause they're the idiot OBs.

Guess there's nothing I can do at this point, but just curious, anyone else never have chicken pox?

Re: Anyone never have chicken pox?

  • I've never had chicken pox and neither has my father. My parents told me that when I was little they tried to get me to catch it, but even after having sleepovers with people that had it and playing with other neighborhood kids that had it, I still never caught it. I'm not nervous about catching it while pregnant, but i have always had a nervousness about catching it when/if my child ever gets it. My OB just told me to stay away from anyone that had it, that was it.

  • You can get a vaccine now, thats what I did cause I never had them when I was a kid.
  • I never had it. My OB told me if someone I knew came in contact with it, that I'd need to obviously avoid them.

There's a vaccine you can get as an adult to prevent getting chicken pox - but I'm not sure what the side effects are when pregnant.
  • I have never had it. You can't get the vaccine if you are pregnant or planning on being pregnant in the next 2-3 months as it is a live vaccine and dangerous to the baby.  Since I have never had it and I need the vaccine (wish the doctor could have checked for that in the numerous yearly exams I have had) my doctor told me to be very careful.  If you are around children a lot you could be at risk for being exposed. I am not around kids for my job but she advised me to let my teacher friends know and if they have a kid in their class with it to ask them to stay away from me.  I wish I had the vaccine as I find I am super paranoid about it...

  • Hey Jessjo!   How's it going?  I had a mild case of chicken pox when i was a kid, so hopefully that covers me.  As for the vaccine mentioned in another post, pregnant women should not take it.

  • I never had chicken pox either.  I did however have the vaccine when it first came out 15 or so years ago.  I have no idea if you need boosters or whatever for that so I'm not convinced I'm immune to it.  And with DS in daycare, I asked my OB to make sure he ran a blood test for chicken pox immunity.  Haven't gotten the results though.

  • I have never gotten either. But I did get the chicken pox shot when I was a teenager when it first came out.

  • I don't think I have ever had it.  If I did it was when I was really little and it was hardly any at all.  I'm going to talk about it with my OB on Wednesday.  I have been exposed to it several times and have never caught it, but it's still something I am concerned with.

  • I have had the chicken pox, but I was exposed again in July when my neice had them. I now have shingles. Wonderful.

  • I think I had one shot when I was a teenager, but I guess its a series of shots and I'm deathly afraid of shots, so I never went back for the rest. I figured it was a life vac, so it wouldn't be available when pregnant. Guess I'll get over my fear of shots during this pregnancy anyway, then I can get the vaccine.

  • I never had it either. My best friend in 3rd grade had it and we were inseparable during the contagious period and I never got it. My friends in middle school used to try to push me to go to a friends house who had it so I would get it. I've also never been vaccinated for it either.

I will be asking my OB about it at my appointment next month.
