Talk to me about the Ergo

I have some birthday money and I really want to get an Ergo. DH thinks it's pointless. I had a Moby that I tried once (yes, once) when DS was under a month old, and I was way too impatient (meaning hormonal) to handle it (luckily my bff is using it now and loves it). So I wore him in the Bjorn a ton for the first 3 months, and even a lot after that, up until about 8 months. He really liked being worn. He's now 20 pounds and just way too heavy for me to put in the Bjorn comfortably.

I know everybody that has an Ergo seems to love it. My question is how often do you use it with an older (DS is 10 months) baby/toddler? We do plan on having at one or two more kids, so it would get more use then too...I'm just wondering if it's still worth buying now or if I should just hold out until we have #2 (when perhaps it could be a gift from grandparents or something).

TIA! :)

  • Do it! We didn't use ours when DS was little (he hated the infant insert thing) so we did the Moby for a while. But we use it a lot now - if he's fussy, I'll wear him facing me just doing stuff around the house, and it soothes him. When we're out, DH wears him backpack-style - that way J can look around. This was great when we were in Maine, because we could go hiking and bring J with us. Plus, he would fall asleep in it pretty much every time (we would put the little cover over his head and it would knock him out). It gets a little hot carrying him around but otherwise it's totally worth it.

  • ditto...I wear him around the hosue on the front and DH wears him on his back on the go...it is hot but a great buy for us, DS also hated the infant insert and we actually started using it more once he was over 6 months old or so
  • I found it a little too complicated to get DD in the back, and in the front she likes to face out (she's a bit of a diva about that). I ended up giving it to a friend of mine. I'm sure if you put more time than I did into reading the instructions, you'll have better luck than I did.
  • DS started walking at 10 months and our Ergo use really dropped.  He wanted to be walking all of the time and hated being strapped in.

With that being said, I used it a TON before then though.  It would definitely be a great thing with a second child.

  • Get one!  I carried DS in the ergo to and from daycare from 4 months to 18 months (on bus and metro).  It was absolutely a must-have for us.

  • Meh. We've had five carriers and the Ergo is middle of the pack. C loooved the Bjorn because he loves facing out and seeing stuff. He's okay with the back carry in the Ergo, but I can't seem to get the knack of getting him that way by myself. Most times, the City Mini is more convenient. For hikes and long walks, we use an LLBean hiking pack and it's actually easier to get him in to that (for a back carry) then the Ergo.

I do keep the Ergo in the car, in case I want to run in to a store and now worry about a cart. But it doesn't get much use.

    The DC Nest. Winers welcome.

  • I used it a bit when DS was tiny - then it sat for a while.  Now at 10 months I use it a lot as a backpack.  It does take some practice to get him on my back, but I am getting better at it (and DS is able to help a bit).  It's nice for times when you can't use a stroller and it is crowded.

  • DD hated it- so after multiple attempts of seeing if she would change her mind- I am going to sell my Ergo Sport that has been used for all of 10 minutes. Let me know if you are interested :-)

  • I LOVE the Ergo.  We used it a ton when DS was a newborn with the insert, which is kind of tricky to figure out at first but once you have the hang of it is easy. DS would fall asleep in it and I could get things done around the house.  The insert has been changed too so I don't know about the updated one.  I carried DS in the front until he was about 15 months since he has been on the smaller side.  Now that he is finally over 22 pounds he gets too heavy in the front and I've mastered putting him on my back. It's not a pretty sight but now that he is older he thinks it's funny and that he is getting a horse ride.  I keep my Ergo in the car too and use it all the time for quick trips in to the store.

  • I started DD3 in our Ergo when she was about 7 months and she loves it. I've even put DD2 in it (on my back) and shes 3! I think its totally worth it!
  • We didn't get the Ergo until DS was 13 months.  We'd used the Moby and Bjorn before then but DS was way too heavy by then for either.  The back carry was a little tricky at first, but once DS got a little older he was able to hold on to me which made it easier.  We don't use it a ton, but it's been a lifesaver on days when he is cranky and I need to make dinner or for times when the stroller would be a pain.  I'd say we use it maybe 3 times a month still and DS is 19-months and 27 lbs.  It's comfortable even now.
