New to the Bump and wondering about travel

I am 12 weeks and stoaked to be a part of this new milestone in life! I'm wondering, do any of you have family on the mainland? How did you plan for them to be at the hospital when you were about to give birth? I'm trying to figure out when we should try to get our parents out here, and I know babies have their own due date so there's no certainty, but did you plan for family to come right before your due date, earlier, after??? Im just worried my family will come too early or too late and miss the incredible moments!

Re: New to the Bump and wondering about travel

  • congratulations!

I don't live in HI (most of us don't, actually - most of us got married there and wished we live there!), but my parents are over 2000 miles away.  My mom is coming 6 days before my due date, and staying for a month.  My MIL (who is 1800 miles away) can only come for a few days, so I think she's just going to pick some dates shortly after our due date and hope for the best!  and my sister (who lives even further away than my parents or IL's) is coming for a few days a week later - which just happens to be thanksgiving

IMO though, it's more important to actually see the baby, than to be there for the birth.  (I don't think I want ppl - aside from MH - around while i'm laboring anyway!)  so if anything, it's better to come a little later than earlier.

This is what we thought, too - we live in Australia, but all of my family are in the USA - so when family members asked me when they should fly out, I said any time after the EDD. Yes that meant none of them were here for the actual birth, but that way they all got to actually see our boys.

  • Very true. It's the first grandchild on both sides so I wish it were a perfect thing to plan but I'd much rather family be able to see the little love than sit there twiddling their thumbs and racking up travel expenses. Thanks to you both!

  • Welcome to the board and congrats on your pregnancy.

I fall into the "was married in HI but live elsewhere" camp.  That said, we're in OK and the majority of our friends and family live on the West Coast.  For L&D (I was induced) it was just me, my DH and my mom (who lives with us) and our doula...

Friends and family started visiting once LO was 4 weeks old...first our BFFs came with their toddler for a four day visit.  The following week my other BFF came on her own for a visit.  A month later my Dad came for 10 days from Alaska and then my SIL from CA came the week after that for a long weekend.

I was glad to have the first month or so to get settled into life with a newborn (nursing, etc.) before having people visiting and staying in my house.  And I was thrilled not to have the pressure of everyone waiting at the hospital while I was in L&D.  I always felt awful for the women who had 25 family members in the waiting room impatiently asking, "when will the baby come?"
