My brother was hit by a car on his bike today. He has seemed to walk away with only minor cuts, scratches and bruising. It's a miracle.
He's legally blind and has mulitple other handicaps as well. He was out riding his Trike/Bike today and his GPS had him turned around in circles. Another bicyclist stopped to help him get pointed in the right direction, and took off across the street. My brother assumed it was a green light & took off into the intersection after the guy. Two cars managed to stop, but the third didn't. His bike is demolished, but he's okay.
My mom is a wreck. I think I'm in shock. He wasn't carrying any ID, medical cards, or wearing a helmet. So so so thankful that his injuries weren't worse, who knows what would have happened.
So a few immediate thoughts jump to mind...
First any healing thoughts & prayers you can spare for my brother Tom would be amazing.
Second, I don't care how old you are or how much of a hurry you're in or how short of a trip you think it's going to be. Always wear your helmets when you're on wheels of any kind and at the very least take your ID with you.
Third, if you're going to stop and be a good samaratin & help out a guy in need, don't turn around and break the law by running a red light. You may be able bodied enough to make it across safely, but the blind guy with 1 and a quarter leg power who you just helped out isn't going to make it, and now that you've helped him out, he trusts you. How about you wait the 2 minutes at the corner with him and make sure he at leasts gets across the intersection safely.

OMG!! How scary. T&P to you and your family.
Please keep us posted on him.
I'm so sorry. I'm so glad that he's alright, but I really hope he always wears a helmet from now on. I totally agree with you- its not that hard to wear and it can easily safe your life.
The number of parents I see not wearing helmets while making their kids wear them astounds me. Show a good example.
And really really good advice on helping someone out. I'm not sure I would have thought about it. Thanks for suggesting that we think it all the way through...
