what do they feel like?
i've had BH (where my stomach gets really tight) but never contractions. for my 1st pg it was medically necessary for me to undergo a c-section (at 38w2d) and my body didn't go through contractions or my water breaking.
this time around my drs will not perform a c-section earlier than 39 weeks and i kind of don't know what to expect. the only way they would perform a c-section earlier is if my body goes into labor by itself (dialating, water breaking, contractions even 10 min apart).
so tell me about:
1. contractions.
2. water breaking.
3. emergency plans for those of you that have kids at home and you went before your scheduled c-section.
thx!
Re: let's talk about contractions & your water breaking
It's good to have an idea as it is definitely possible to go into labor prior to your csection. This is my experience...
1. Contractions - I had BH contractions about 1 week prior to going into labor and they felt like you mentiones; belly getting tight and not timeable. I never had real contractions until I went into labor and boy I knew they were real. They were low in the pelvic region and travelled to my back and they were timeable. The contractions then got closer together and stronger;I even felt them in my upper thighs. If between 5-7 minutes and getting stronger, prepare for possible show time!
2. Water breaking - so I thought my water broke and was the reason I went to hospital when my contractions were only 10 minutes apart. They tested the fluid and was negative but im convinced it broke because when doc tried to break, there was little fluid. anyways, i felt a small gush when i went into bed, went to bathroom and changed and it happened again. i was not sure if it was me leaking urine but thought it strange i did it twice in a row. Water breaking is a bit tricky, it can range from big gush to small leak.If in doubt, get checked!
3.Emergency plans- i didn't have a csection but we just had my parents on the look out. we called them when ready to go to hospital and they came over to care for Evan (it was almost 2am so easier for them to come over).

When the contrax are the real thing, they take your breath away. I had them 3-5 minutes apart for 6 days before i transitioned into the 2nd stage of labor. it sucked ass!
When my water broke i was asleep, i went to get up to pee and as i rolled over, it was a gurgle noise and then a POP and then literally a gush of water.
Contractions: There are no words to explain them, but I can tell you that you will know the difference. I felt like this ripping sensation that I cant really describe (not to scare you). But if you do feel contractions before your due date they will perform a emergency c-section. You will have to have family & friends on call to take care of the LO, and always have your bags ready cause you never know when the baby will decide to come.
They broke my water at the hospital but then again I came in with contraction 2 mins apart and was 4 cm dialated.
i never thought of this! ty ladies for your responses!
Haha, I'm surprised w/ Sophie, you don't already have mattress protector. Our mattress is expensive and that is the first thing we bought when we got it... JIC something spills or whatever, the mattress doesn't get stained.

1. contractions- I only had BH and then really terrible contractions after they induced me (pitocin contractions are apparently worse than natural ones). It felt like....wow I can't even explain it, like if someone was totally squeezing the crap out of my insides for 3min at a time. I got an epi an hour after the crazy pains though lol.
2. water breaking- it happened to me at 12:30am when I was laying down to go to sleep already. O.M.G. I just GUSHED and then I got up to go to the bathroom so I can gush in the toilet and I gushed a LOT more when I sat down. It never stops though, my water didn't stop coming out until I had the kid. It was disgusting and gross and I hated it. But I was glad my water broke because otherwise I'm not sure I would've timed my contractions right, etc.
3. emergency plans for those of you that have kids at home and you went before your scheduled c-section. Don't have experience with this but if I had to have one my mom would take care of A and come home with us to help out I'm sure.
not all the time, mel! my contrax were 3 min apart and I was 6 cm dilated and I didn't even know I was in labor. The 2nd time around, it came on so suddenly and I went so quickly, the pain was much, much less!
I never had braxton hicks. The first real contractions I had were when I was in labor (right before my water broke). To me they felt like (and I'm sorry in advance for the TMI) the types of lower stomach cramps you get when you are about to have diarrhea. I actually went and sat on the toilet because I thought that's what was happening. My water broke while I was sitting on the toilet thinking that my contractions were diarrhea cramps LOL. I felt fluid coming out and figured I had just peed, but when I looked into the toilet bowl, it didn't look like pee - the color was different and it had...stuff...in it (I know, I'm sorry...this is so gross...but you asked). I had lost big pieces of my mucous plug about a week before labor started, and when my water broke, it had little pieces of what looked like mucous plug in it.
With the "cramps" continuing (i.e., contractions), combined with the weirdness in the toilet bowel (which I was in denial that it was actually my water breaking...I kept trying to convince myself it was just pee), I finally noticed that the cramping had developed a steady rhythm. To me they felt like really, really, really bad period cramps, including the lower back pain you get sometimes when you have your period, but instead of just being a continuous, dull ache, they would come and go like waves from not feeling anything at all in between the contractions to the huge pain when the contractions would hit.
Like Clari mentioned, I continued to leak fluid for a while. The worst was when I was in labor and delivery triage because I was sitting in the bed with my water basically just pouring out all over me
Horrible. Once I got the epidural, I didn't feel anything anymore so I didn't care.
