Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Anyone doing BLW?

I'm looking for some information on it. DD2 doesn't much care for purees and I'm trying to figure out my options.

What do you feed your LO? When? How much? How long did it take for LO to catch on to feeding?

Re: Anyone doing BLW?

  • We feed DS most of the same thing we eat, as long as there isn't too much sugar or sodium in it.  We found broccoli was a really good food to start with, since it was easy for him to grasp with a little 'handle'.  Other favorites of his include cheese, watermelon, grapes, carrots, spaghetti, and chicken.  He gets 2-3 real meals a day: always breakfast and lunch, and usually dinner too.  I make sure to always offer him at least 2-3 different options at each meal, so he really has the choice of what he wants to eat.  I found that he didn't eat much at all the first few weeks, but after that it seems like he eats more and more at each meal.

  • I wouldn't say we do BLW but lately DS doesn't really like the purees.  He'll take bananas from a jar sometimes and yogurt but he really prefers to feed himself.  We have started just giving him bits of whatever we eat unless it is something spicy that he can't handle yet.
  • Yes, I was in the same situation as you.  I kept trying the purees thinking she'd get the hang of it and it started turning into her sealing her lips shut for the spoon.  I randomly gave her some fruit on her high chair tray plus a  mum-mum and she devoured everything so I gave up essentially on the baby food.  Did a good amount of research on BLW and it makes complete logical and common sense.  We do the same as the OP.  She has what we have barring that it's not unhealthy or unsafe.  You'd be amazed how quickly they learn to handle the food themselves and not choke since they're in control of what goes into their mouths.  DD#1 was the same way and did great with it.  I still BF until 11 months with her as well.  HTH!

Oh and foods, shredded cheese, any soft fruits, veggies (steamed) like baby carrots, broccoli, potatoes, etc., yogurt splattered on the tray, pasta, etc.  She LOVES mealtime now and it only took her roughly a week to get the hang of it.  Just don't be fearful, trust that she can do it and sit with her at all times.

  • Thanks! What age did you start it at? I don't want to give her anything too early.

We started right at 6 months.

I forgot to mention the breakfast foods that he loves too - bagels, scrambled eggs with cheese and peppers, pancakes, and yogurt.

Also at 6 months. Pedi just said no to meats, shellfish, peanuts, honey and egg whites - the standards.  All else is a go.  We don't have allergies in our families so I'm not overly concerned about her developing any.

That's so interesting. My pedi made me promise I WOULD give meat because he was concerned that DD wouldn't get enough iron otherwise (most baby foods are fortified). But otherwise, what everyone else has said - we just feed her what we're eating. We started right at 6 months. The thing is, it's not meant to be a meal replacement right away - it's more about the learning process. So you may have to provide more BM/formula than you would if you stuck to purees. LO will self-wean off the bottles as she figures out that these toys are also filling her up. The website posted is good or read Rapley's book - Baby Led Weaning. Also, the AP board is full of gals who use this method, so feel free to ask questions over there, as well.

Hmm, thanks. I'll have to check it out.

Funny you should write this as this has been my dilemma all weekStick out tongue  I'm concerned about her iron intake considering she's not a fan of the spoon feeding fortifed cereals, hence minimal iron intake.  So I've been reading labels non-stop to try to figure out what I can give her to ensure she gets some iron in her diet.  That being said, I have (before talking to the pedi) given her roasted pork and chicken bits and she loooooved it so I'm now wondering if perhaps I need a second opinion from the pedis office.  Thanks for that!
