1st Trimester

Heartbeat ?

Hi ladies!

The first day of my last was August 1st and I was given my trigger shot on August 18th.  My RE wants me to come in on Tuesday for an ultrasaound to check if he can see a sack and to also check the implantation.  He also said that they would look for a heartbeat.  Is it too early to hear a heartbeat?  TIA

Re: Heartbeat ?

  • Too early to "hear" but they might be able to see one.

We saw ours at 5 weeks, 5 days.

interesting that you didn't hear it. w/ ds#2 we heard ours at 5 w 4d but they weren't using a regular doppler they were doing an internal u/s and we heard it then. they couldn't get it w/ a regular doppler though.

  • My first US was @ 5w and they were very suprised to see as much as they did. It was only a sac & they checked to see where implantation was. The following week @ 6w6d we were able to see the flicker of the heart. The RE said we definetly wouldn't hear the HB, it was way to early. We were able to see it though.

Best of luck and CONGRATS again!

What you are hearing is the computer generating a heartbeat sound based off the pattern seen in the u/s - you cannot hear the actual heart itself until 10 weeks or so. At least, that is what every u/s tech has told me.

  • so your trigger was the 18th?  Meaning you probably O'd on the 19th or 20th.   If it's the 20th - then Sept. 3rd would make you 4w pregnant.   So Tuesday you will be 4w4d.

At 4w4d you may see a "collection of fluid".    I had my first u/s at 4w6d.  and we saw the coll. of fluid and the faint beginnings of a yolk sac.    At 6w even we saw the faintest/slowest start of a h/b.   RE said that a day earlier and we wouldn't have seen it yet.    At 6w6d we saw, the yolk sac, and the h/b clearly.

Thanks!  I was wondering what we would be able to see this early on.

    Yep, very true. Yes

  • The last ultrasound that I had was approx 6 weeks 4 days and we were able to see the heartbeat.  The tech said that it looked like it had started to beat within the last 24 hours.  So, you're not going to be able to see a heartbeat this early in the game.

    Good luck!
