XP: Advice needed for 6mo old

Hey ladies.  I asked this on my local board, but thought you all might have good ideas.

Little G is 6 1/2 months now and is EBF.  Won't even take a bottle (sigh).

He's super active now and won't sit still long enough to nurse, except for his early morning feeding.  He's never done the 20+ minute sessions, but seemed to get enough going for 5-10 minutes.

Now, he is technically nursing for 5 minutes or so, but it's more like suck-suck-suck--pull away and look around.  It doesn't seem effective.  After 5 minutes, he's trying to wiggle to the floor.

He is on solids 2x daily so I wouldn't worry, but the quick nursing-snack sessions don't keep him full for very long.

Any advice on keeping him focused on eating longer?

I only BF one baby this long, but by this point I was pumping for the most part, and only nursing at night.  I'm clueless.

TIA!

Re: XP: Advice needed for 6mo old

  • I've never BF a 6 month old, but my LO does the same thing (almost 5months old).

I try to nurse in the same place and keep it quiet around me so there are as few distractions as possible. That seems to help. I don't have any other suggestion though :)

  • I had the same problem.  We are at home most of the time (SAHM) so I side-lay nurse her in my bed. I really like it.  It gives me an excuse to lay down and relax for a bit (10 minutes max, speed nurser).

I started doing this when I was getting frustrated with a situation similar to yours.

When we are out and about, if she is hungry enough, she will eat anywhere.  I do have to deal with the occasional milk spray when she pops off.  Ugghhh.
