This may be a stupid bedding question....

I guess I don't see the need for the bedding sets since with newborns you don't use the comforter and I don't plan on using bumpers. Am I missing something completely? In a newborn's crib don't you basically just need fitted sheets? If I am completely wrong please please let me know.

  • I think you might be right...i'm under the same impression at least

the comforter and bed skirt is really just decorative. I'm still debating if I should get a bedding set myself.

  • In terms of what you need, that's probably about right as far as I can see.  e ordered a crib sheet, skirt and then a baby blanket for the following winter when the baby is older.

  • You're right.

However, I used the bumper when DD turned 6 months. And we use her comforter as a blanket for her to crawl/play on when we're out.

  • Yes, a crib sheet is all the is needed (and bumpers if you decide to use them). The bedding we bought came with the skirt, sheet, bumpers, and blanket. We won't use the blanket in the bed until she's older, but it has an opening for a curtain rod in one end so it can be hung on the wall as wall art if we want. I'm sure I'll just use it on the floor in the living room for LO to lay on though.

  • but what's the fun in that?

     just kidding.

nope you're pretty much right, the rest is cosmetic.  with the exception of bumpers/breathable bumpers which of course is a controversial topic.

we won't be using a crib for around 6 months in favor of a co-sleeper, but when we do I think all I'm going to get is a crib skirt - just to hide the under part and bring a splash of color to the crib.  I don't know the verdict on bumpers at that age but will do my research.

  • I'm in your camp--it seems superfluous. We will not be buying a set. We already have been given a good stack of hand-me-down sheets for the crib and blankets for playing and later on. I have to figure out which sheets will fit the co-sleeper we hope to use primarily. We don't intend to use a crib bumper unless baby needs it once more mobile and that is a long ways away. I think we will use under the crib as toy storage so a crib skirt is just in the way and something else to collect dust.  I'd rather put the money from a set toward a really great natural mattress.
  • I'm with you.  And I'm not even getting cutesy sheets, just plain old white ones.  I'm so boring haha.  I will be making a crib skirt (probably) but it will also wrap around my bed since we are going to sidecar our crib.
  • I needed bumpers for DD.  She was a restless sleeper and as soon as she started rolling over she was hitting her head on the side rails.  Once you buy that, the fitted sheet, and a dust ruffle (I store things under the crib), you might as well buy the set, and most times it's cheaper that way.  I used the comforter when I "made" the bed.
  • Everyone brought up good points on the things in a set for when the baby is older....I'm just trying to get a list of things we *need* vs. what we want. I lost my job over a month ago and so far haven't had any luck getting a new one and I was just trying to decide what I need vs. what we want. Thank you all for your input. Right now I just feel like the extra $100 can be spent on something else for the baby.

  • We used the bumper for dd.  She survived.  :)  I totally see your point though.  The comforter still hangs over the back of her rocker and pedi said all you need for a nb is a mattress.  Find some cute sheets and you're good to go!

  • I had to use the bumper for DD once she hit 6 months old.  She started scooting at 5 months and crawling at 6.  Once that happened, her legs and arms used to get stuck in the railings all the time.  She was rolling over on her own (of course), so I knew the risk of SID was significantly lower.

As for the entire bedding set, it's definitely not NEEDED, but it is cute.  If you think about it, we only need one sheet, pillow cases and a comforter on our beds, but we purchase shams, bed skirts, throw pillows, etc...  It's strictly for show :-)
