I just got a bill from the anesthesiologist who administered my epidural... his fees are apparently $3,150. That's how much my OB charges for the whole delivery and all my prenatal visits! I remember seeing on my hospital bill something like $175 for epidural but I guess that was for the actual medication and not the doctor's fees. With my insurance coverage, I'm being asked to pay $435. But that's still a lot, is this normal?
Re: anesthesiologist bill- is this possible?

Is the $3150 what he charges or what your insurance allows (i.e. the amount you pay a portion of, usually 20%)? The provider can technically charge whatever they want. My anesthesiologist charged $2200, my insurance allows $1134, and I owe $227 of that. The insurance allowance is determined by your insurance carrier (obviously) and apparently, they have determined that number is appropriate.
With anesthesia, though, the allowance depends on how many 15 minute increments you were on the anesthesia (always rounded up). So if you had anesthesia for 16 minutes, you get charged for two 15 minute increments. So the longer your labor with the epidural, the higher the allowance and the more you owe.
thank you all for the responses. it seems like the range is all over the place...
I had a normal vaginal delivery. I didn't have any problems with the epidural, and I got it around 6pm and delivered at 11pm. It just totally sucks that this came out of the blue, totally wasn't expecting this
