anesthesiologist bill- is this possible?

I just got a bill from the anesthesiologist who administered my epidural... his fees are apparently $3,150. That's how much my OB charges for the whole delivery and all my prenatal visits! I remember seeing on my hospital bill something like $175 for epidural but I guess that was for the actual medication and not the doctor's fees. With my insurance coverage, I'm being asked to pay $435. But that's still a lot, is this normal?

  • That seems pretty high to me, but maybe it has to do with where you live??? My anesthesiologist charged around $900, I think I had to pay $180 (20%).

  • The bill to my insurance company for the anethesiologist was $6,600.  Thank goodness they covered the entire thing.

  • My anesthesiologist bill was around $5,000 but I had a c-section so I don't know if that makes a difference.  I'm just happy that is covered, my $5,000 nursery bill on the other hand is not which does not make me happy.

  • My bill, before insurance, for my spinal was $1540.00.  I'd call and ask why it's so expensive for 1 procedure.

  • the bill for my epidural was $9400. insurance covered it all.
  • My bill was $1400 and I owe $900 of that. It was well worth every penny...sucks it's just one of the multiple of bills that just keep coming.
  • That sounds like about the ballpark that was charged to my insurance
  • Is the $3150 what he charges or what your insurance allows (i.e. the amount you pay a portion of, usually 20%)?  The provider can technically charge whatever they want.  My anesthesiologist charged $2200, my insurance allows $1134, and I owe $227 of that.  The insurance allowance is determined by your insurance carrier (obviously) and apparently, they have determined that number is appropriate.

With anesthesia, though, the allowance depends on how many 15 minute increments you were on the anesthesia (always rounded up).  So if you had anesthesia for 16 minutes, you get charged for two 15 minute increments.  So the longer your labor with the epidural, the higher the allowance and the more you owe.

  • That's super close to what they charged me.  I don't remember an exact amount, but I remember it being in the 3 grand ball park.  I did however, have a c section, so not sure if that makes a difference.  Thank goodness we have good insurance!
  • My epidural bill is like $4200 and I have to pay $500 of it after insurance!  Its crazy!
  • thank you all for the responses. it seems like the range is all over the place...

I had a normal vaginal delivery. I didn't have any problems with the epidural, and I got it around 6pm and delivered at 11pm. It just totally sucks that this came out of the blue, totally wasn't expecting this :(
