Clicky: What's the temp in your house?

DH and I have a little disagreement over the thermostat settings in the house. I'm curious how we compare with the rest of our Austin peeps.

BTW, if you aren't from Austin, if you don't have AC, or if you need some "other" category, just explain below.

I would die! It doesn't help that the MB is the hottest room in the house so we lower it to 74-75 at night and then 80 when we are gone during the day.

I would melt into a pool of sweat.

I'm sweating just thinking about it.

I answered according to what DH does when I'm gone and he's home with the kids all day, 76.  I rarely put it above 74 when I'm home, though.

  • When I am home I put it between 76-78 and when we go to bed it goes down to 73-75 (70 if DH has a say so). But when we leave it goes up to 80.

we do about this, too. Embarrassed maybe a little hotter when we're sleeping because MH doesn't like when the A/C turns on, he wakes up.   I, in turn, wake up in a pool of sweat.

  • We keep ours at 78 day or night.  We rarely adjust it.

I really wonder how accurate everyone's thermometers are.  I can't believe that we are comfortable at 78 but others need it below 75.   I don't know if our house could even get to 74...the a/c would be running nonstop.

Our AC is running nonstop along with ceiling fans.  :)  We keep it at 72, but our electric bill is atrocious so maybe we should turn it up.  I would die if it was 78 in here though.  Our friends keep their temp much higher and every time we go over there DH is sweating by the time we leave.

FWIW, when I loved in an on campus apartment where all bills were included I kept it at 68 year round.  It was glorious.

The way the house is set up the living and kitchen are in the back and the sun set on the front side of the house so that helps. We have ceiling fans in every room that are on all day long.  We also change clothes and put on shorts and tanks when we get home.

  • We have it set at 76 during the day, since we're home most of the day.  At night we started setting ours to 73. We find that DS sleeps better when it's cooler in the house.
  • How are all you people not dead?

Ours is currently at 72 and doesn't move, night or day.

  • When I'm at home during the day (working at my desk), it's set to 76.

Once DH gets home & we're more active, it goes down to 74.

    For bed, it's at 72.

I do think it can be hard to truly compare. I know my mom's house at 75 is way cooler than our house is at 75.

  • We have a brand new pretty awesome a/c, insulation all over the damn place and 74 is cold in our house. So we keep it at 74 or 75 all day long. Eta: we also have a lot of (big) windows and thankfully our electric bills haven't been over $125 the entire year.

it's actually not *that* bad, we've adjusted.  but I think our thermostat is funky - it's set at 78 but my travel clock says 75.  but the clock is in the bedroom where it's cooler.

    so who knows.

Love that! Ours is 76 when we are at work and 70 when we're home. We have a huge electric bill. 350 most summer months. But I am always HOT!

  • if they house weren't for sale it's be up around 78, but since people might call at any moment, we keep it around 75 so getting it down to frigid (72-73) is quick.

  • It depends... At night 68 or 69 degrees. During the day between 71-75
  • My answer is kinda unfair. You asked for today, so I answered for today! LOL

Yesterday and last night, I had it at my normal 78 degrees, which is perfect for me. However, the last few weeks I've been waking up hot in the middle of the night, so I've lowered it to 77. I answered that today it's set to 77, but only that low because I'm pregnant.

When DH is on town, it's a whole other ball game. He likes it around 70 or even 69, so we compromise with 74. I refuse to let him get it below 74 because then the dogs get cold and what kind of person freezes out their dogs?! Wink

  • 78 during the day while the kids and I are at home with all of the fans going. 76 at night. I don't want a huge bill. I am comfortable all of the time, if I weren't I would lower it.

  • 73 during the day, 71 at night
  • 72/73 during the day, 69 at night. and  no pants most of the time right now Stick out tongue electricity bills haven't been too bad though, highest was $200.

  • What a big range.  We typically have ours at 78.  Sometimes we put it to 76 and if we have alot of people over we'll go a little lower.

  • We keep ours similar to Clynn and are comfortable.  It's 80 during the day and I change the upstairs (where the bedrooms are) to 77 at night.  We have trees around and don't have sun blaring into any windows, for the most part.  I'm sure that has something to do with it.  Honestly, sometimes it feels chilly and I go check the thermostat and it still says 80.

We go to my IL's and I always have to borrow a sweatshirt - in the middle of summer.  IMO, it's ridiculous.

  • We keep ours at 77 during the day when we are not home. If we are home, it is 74-75 during the day. DH likes to sleep in an ice box, so at night it is set at 69-70. I am comfortable at 74-76 day or night.

  • We keep it on 76 during the day and 71 at night.  Our bedroom is a heatbox all of the time and at 71 at night I still sleep without blankets and I'm cold natured!
  • 75 when we're not at home

72(ish) when we're home, cooking dinner, watching tv

70 when we're sleeping.  I would be fine at 74 night and day... but DH insists on freezing me out at night.

  • We keep it at 74-75 during the day and 68 at night.
