Babies: 3 - 6 Months

baby clothing sizing mini vent

Okay, I am probably the last person to really realize this, but the sizing is all jacked up for babies. Carter's 3 month sizes only go up to 12.5 lbs. I would have thought that 3 month clothing would mean 3-6 months (in general, I realize every baby is a little different). My little girl is over 13 lbs, and she isn't exactly a big girl. At her 2 month appointment, she was in the 45th percentile. But, then I look at some other 3 month clothing and it says 16 lbs - X lbs.  It's hard to organize and figure out what she should be wearing now, and what she should be wearing later.

I realize this is a dumb vent, but its just annoying. I guess I am just complaining because it just makes it tough to remember which clothes have which sizing.. especially since I still have baby brain!

Re: baby clothing sizing mini vent

  • I hear ya!  I feel like I miss the window with certain items...since every brand runs different I never now which one will fit.  My other vent with Carters is that there is a significant difference between the 3 and the 6. DS is long with a long torso so the size 3 onsies are getting too short.  But size 6 is way to wide so he's swimming in them. It's too bad because I really like Carters...not too expensive, good quality and super cute.

  • Thats one of the reasons I like gymboree- they come 0-3, 3-6, etc.  and the size difference between 0-3 and 3-6 isn't huge- DS moved easily into 3-6 bottoms (long legs) and wears 0-3 onesies

  • It doesn't change as they get older.  My daughter can wear size 6 months in one brand and 12 months in another.
  • I hear ya. My DD is tall and skinny so we have clothing issues all the time. Right now she is 0-3 clothes but the waist is huge so her pants are always falling off. But NB pants are like capris on her. Then if she is wearing Gerber onsies she has to wear a 3-6 month onsie, same with if its PJ'S with feet in them.

I organized everything before she was born into boxes based on sizes. Who knew my kid would be tall and skinny and wear a little bit of everything.

And it sucks cause I can't buy ahead because I have no idea when she will go to the size and how that will fit.

  • I was always led to believe that carters was as follows: NB is NB,  3 mos is 0-3, 6 mos is 3-6, 6 mos is 6-9, 9 mos is 9-12 etc.

Well, maybe that's my problem? That just doesn't make sense to me. Oh well! Thanks. Smile

I think this must be the case because DD wear 0-3 in most things and in carters she wears 3 months.

See, now I'm really confused because you have two 6 mos there... ;)

  • I always just take DD's age and double it....... It's worked so far!

yup this is right! I keep the size she is in and the next size up out in her closet so that I don't 'miss' the window with clothes, too

  • I'm on baby #2 and I still feel annoyed by all of it. To make my life easier, I tend to identify a brand or two that I like and that seem to really work for them and thier body types and stick with those.

I had it the best with DD because she was a chunker but moderately long and fit perfectly into Carter's at all times. And since she was born at the begining of a season, she fit right in line with that, too.

With DS we've had to already buy 2 summer wardrobes and really should've done a 3rd but are squeezing out the last few onesies to make it to Fall stuff in the new size lol.

  • Either I memorize what size in what brand Alexandra is fitting perfectly at the time of shopping, or I bring a onesie that fits perfect so I can hold it up to measure.

This is exactly how Carters is sized.  If you compare the 3 month Carters "suggested sizing for weight/height" it compares to 0-3 in other brands.  My LO is 75% for weight, but is off the charts for height.  As a result, Carters fits her best because they are cut long and skinny.  She just started wearing 3-6 or 6 month sizes a couple of weeks ago.  We actually have a few 0-3 that are still big.

This exactly! Very confusing at first, but now I know. I also have to make sure DH knows this for when he dresses DS
