Trouble TTC

Talk to me about motility

DH's count was 41 million (up from 24 million the last time).

BUT

54% were grade 0 motility, 23% were grade 2, 23% were grade 3

(I know those numbers don't add up to 100% but that's what the nurse told me.) My RE is calling it a "moderate" motility problem.

I am on day 43 of my cycle, so I'm going in on Friday morning for b/w and u/s. I responded really well to 100mg of Clomid with our last TI cycle, so this coming cycle we are doing IUI.

Ugh, DH is asleep right now. I really dread telling him the news.

Re: Talk to me about motility

  • I am sorry, DH has had 4 SAs done but I have never heard motility described that way.  Each time we were just given an overall % and were told anything over 40% is now considered normal.

Our RE just gave us a single motility number, so I'm not sure about the split between grade 2 vs. grade 3 motility.

Basically grade 4 is the best, and grade 0 is the worst.

23% at a 3 motility is a little low.  When was the last time YH ejaculated before this sample?  The longer he goes without, the slower the sperm can become.  Temperature changes in the scrotum can also cause slowness.

Has he been to a urologist?  You may want to think about having him do that.

  • We also had an overall percentage, so I am not sure what your results mean.

  • Ours was just given as a total - they like to see >50% motility.

Wow, I can't do math today apparently. Smile

We had abstained for 5 days (crazy week). I had read that the longer he goes, the slower they can be, but the nurse said the motility was the same as his last SA (which I was not told--I'm trying not to be angry about that). He has been having some unexplained testicular pain lately so he has been to a urologist--which is the whole reason why we had the repeat SA done.

  • Not sure about motility, sorry!  But I do know that my RE puts all men with count, motility or morph issues on the same supplement.  I got DH's at GNC.  Here's a link:

    https://www.fertilityblend.com/

If you're doing an IUI, they will wash the sample before the actual procedure.  The way my RE described it yesterday, the wash gets rid of any that are slow and mis-shapen.  Did YH have a good overall count?

Duh...I saw it in your OP after I replied.  I guess reading comprehension is my friend as well.Embarrassed

If it helps, DH's sample for this IUI was 37 million pre-wash and almost 27 post wash.  My RE was very pleased with those numbers.

Bahaha! Don't feel bad, you saw my lovely math skills. Stick out tongue

Yeah I'm excited about his count being up, and I'm really not that freaked out because IUI is going to be a good solution (hopefully). I just don't want DH to worry too much about it.

Thanks for the website!  Our doc broke it into numbers for us, as in 33% were not moving at all, 15% were zooming along and the rest were moving somewhere in-between.
