I just found out on Sunday that I am pregnant. My husband and I are very excited but a bit overwhelmed as well. I called to maky my first appointment with my OB today. For some reason I thought it would have been sooner but it isn't until week 10!! I have an option of going in for an ultra sound at week 8 but my insurance will only cover necessary ultrasounds. Does anyone know how much an ultrasound would cost to pay for out of pocket?? I really don't want to wait till week 18 for my first ultrasound.
One more question ( I think I may have a lot!!). When did you tell your parents and close friends??
Re: Intro and question
First - Congrats!!!
Second- what kind of insurance do you have? You should be able to get online and check your plan to see how much they charge for an ultrasound.
Third- With the first pregnancy we shared the news at 5 weeks because we were so shocked and excited! With this pregnancy we told everyone at 6 weeks. We chose to do so early because we are low risk pregnancies and we would want a support group if we had a miscarriage.
Hi and welcome! I have no idea what an OOP u/s would cost, but I don't think you should pay just two weeks before your scheduled (covered) one. If there were a larger gap (like your doc scheduled one for week 20) then I would consider it.
You'd be surprised how fast 2 weeks can go by. Put that money into a savings account for your LO.
Good luck!
ETA: we've only told my mother so far. The rest of the family will find out after our 7week u/s and friends will trickle down from there.
Congrats to you..how exciting and yes I understand the overwhelming at times. When I was pg with DD we did not get in to see the Drs until 9 weeks. I had a m/c prior to DS so I was seen for an u/s at 5wks and 7wks. This time around they got me in right away but no u/s until 9 weeks which is just killing me because I am so nervous. I am not sure how much an out of pocket u/s would cost but you could definitely call your Drs office and/or insurance company. I totally understand not wanting to wait.
With all of our children we had such a hard time waiting...we told at about 5 weeks. With this one we have told immediate family but are waiting until after the u/s to tell those I work with and what not.
Call your insurance company. Most cover 2 ultrasounds: 1 early one to date and confirm your pg and 1 between 18-22 weeks for the anatomy scan. Your Dr.'s office can also call and find out how much an out of pocket u/s will cost if they do only cover 1.
We had the possibility of a tubal pg so we had 2 early u/s: 1 at 6wks to confirm it was a real pg and 1 at 7wks to then confirm the heartbeat. We had one at 17 weeks for the anatomy scan and I recently had one at 32 weeks because I fell and they wanted to confirm that everything was ok. I didn't have to pay for the extra ones because the Dr. said they were necessary.
We were so excited that we immediately told our families after we got the BFP. We regretted after finding out if could be a tubal pg. That was a long week of blood work and worry. I think next time we'll wait until we have the heartbeat to tell everyone though I know many ppl that wait until 12 weeks because that's when the risk of m/c drops considerably. Good luck and I hope you get to see your LO before 18weeks!
My insurance will cover all appointments and delivery at 100%. However ultrasounds are covered only at 80%. The doctors office actually called to tell me before my first appointment to let me know financially how my pregnancy would affect me. I asked how much the u/s cost in order to know what 20% would be for me. She said generally you only have two. The first is $180 and the second is $220. Not sure about the change in price from one to the other. I guess one is an internal? Anyhow, I am in VA, but I assume the cost should be about the same elsewhere. maybe?
My doctors says 8-12 weeks for your first u/s. I have mine scheduled for 8 weeks, but I got in tomorrow for a prenatal appointment.
