1st Trimester

...Really? (job rant)

So I've been feeling exceptionally sick today. I feel really worn down and I woke up starving, but haven't been able to eat anything til lunch... And then I through all of it up. So I called work and told them I really wasn't feeling well...

Me: I'm not sure if you want me to come in.

Store Manager: Of course we do! You're scheduled today.

Me: Well I really don't feel well and I just threw up my entire lunch.

SM: Well, you should be ready to go then! Just don't eat while you're here.

Me: (I thought he was joking) Okay, I'll just do that, then...

SM: Okay. Bye! (hangs up)

...Seriously?! I am SO pissed right now! He knows I'm pregnant and he knows how the last time went when I came in really sick (very dramatically, and ending with me running to the restroom to puke, and then going home early). Ugh! This is going to be a long night...

  • GEEZ!!!  Can you take a sick day?  Or vacation day?  That so sucks.

  • I've only been working there for about 6mo, so I have no sick or vacation days. Since he wants me to come in, I basically have no choice... Other than to quit, which would be immature. *sigh*

  • OMG...can you say insensitive?  I can't believe he had the nerve to tell you to not eat anything while you are there...WTF?  I'm glad my supervisors are all women who have children, so they understand what I am feeling.  My DH would be ready to curse the living daylights out of your supervisor if it was me.

  • next time, don't make it their choice whether you go in or not.

Next time call and say "I am very sick today.  I won't be coming in"

  • I agree with Staycee, don't give them a choice. You know your body and your limits, they don't. Maybe suggest having someone "on call" for when you are scheduled in case this happens again in the future, that way the schedule is always covered.

  • Yes, I should have. I completely regret that now. It's hard for me, though, just calling in because I like my job and I like working; and I know that my supervisor appreciates my work ethic. So calling in just makes me feel bad (I've always had loyalty 'issues' with my jobs). However, my respect for my supervisor is extremely low right now. ...I may have just gotten over my loyalty 'issue' for future call-in's.

I do like the "on call" idea. We're not short staffed, so that would be nice if we could do something like that. Perhaps I'll demand it of him after I tell him what a hug jackhole he was to say that to me over the phone (okay, maybe not that forceful, but still).
