Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did DC go from two naps to one?

When did your DC go from two naps a day to one? I keep reading "between 12 and 24 months" - but is there a shorter typical window?

DD has never been on a "real" nap schedule, but she generally naps late morning and again late afternoon, and then stays up pretty late. I'm trying to get her on a real schedule, with hopes of fixing our nighttime issues, but I'm not sure if I should battle now to get her on a two nap schedule, just to have her outgrow one in a couple months.

 Thanks!

Re: When did DC go from two naps to one?

  • DD didn't really have a nap schedule until she moved to the nursey 2 room at daycare, when she was about 13 months. It took about a month for her to adjust but she is doing well. I have to get her up at 630, she naps about 1230 to 230 ish and goes to bed between 8 and 830.

  • Emmalee's schedule until recently was this:

    wake up: 7am

    nap: 9-11am & 1-3pm

    bedtime: 7pm

I think she is just now trying to change to 1 nap, but there is no consistency as to when she wants to nap. Sometimes it is in the morning and sometimes late afternoon. I just follow her cues and adjust schedules as necessary. Unfortunately I am failing miserably at that. I am trying to slowing change her schedule though to go more to her DCP nap schedule of 12-3.

  • DS is mostly on one nap now (almost 13 months), although I can get him to take two if he wakes up early in the AM and I wake him up from his first nap after an hour and a half. Our days go either like this...

7am - wake (DH or I usually have to wake him)
    10:00 - 11:30 - nap (I have to wake him)
    2:30 - 4:30 - nap
    7:45pm - bed

    Or like this...

    8am - wake
    11:30 - 3:00 - nap
    7:45 - bed

I would start by keep a record of when she sleeps if it's left up to her and see if any patterns emerge, then base your schedule off that. I started trying to get DS on a schedule at 6 months or so and it took 2 weeks of charting his sleep habits before we were really on a good schedule. I've done the same thing every time his sleep habits have changed or if we get thrown off by vacations/house guests/etc. and it's worked really well for us. GL!

ETA: I used to work in the Toddler room at a daycare and all the babies, from 15 months on, were on one nap. Some took a bit of adjusting but they could all cope with just one nap. That said, other babies don't naturally switch to one nap for a few months longer. It really depends on your LO.

  • DS will be 20 months tomorrow and is still on 2 naps a day! For 2 hr each. He also sleeps 11+ hr at night

  • Our boys did when they moved to the 1 year old class at DC.  They were actually around 13.5 months at the time.  Some days they will still take a little morning or afternoon cat nap, but they're pretty good with the one 2-2.5 hour nap now.
  • I don't think it will be anytime soon for us. She generally wakes up around 6:30 am, takes a nap from 9:30-11am and then again sometime between 2:30-4pm. In bed for the night between 8-8:30pm.

I'm loving the two-nap schedule and am in no hurry to go to one.

  • Sarah is still on 2 naps a day and doesn't seem to be changing. Her schedule has been the same for about half a year now:

    7 am wake

    9-11 nap

    2-4 nap

    7 pm bed
