Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I have a 1 year old! & I decided I'm not done BF

I'm just not ready to 'push' being done.  If he loses interest great but it breaks my heart to have him cry and ask me for milk and tell him no.  I don't see a reason for it (in my situtation - I understand that many others have reasons they need to or want to wean).

I've already gotten a couple of comments from people (including DH) along the lines of, "well as long as you're not still BF him when he's 4!"

I think not quite being ready to wean exaclty at 1 year is a ways away from nursing a 4 year old.  I've got some time! :)

Long story short - WE MADE IT ONE YEAR!!!  Yeah!

  • You know BM continues to be an excellent source of nutrition for babies who are older than a year right? It's great if you can go longer.

  • Congrats!

I am still going on 18 months of breastfeeding this weekend. I don't offer unless DS pulls on my shirt. I hear the comments still from MIL and sometimes DH. My mom mentioned it once, too. But I don't care what they say because I am going to try till DS is 2.

How often generally does he nurse?
  • Congrats! We're still nursing here too. She's down to just 2 sessions per day (morning and before bed).

  • He nurses before we go to work and daycare. And again after I get out of work and DS has eaten his dinner. On the weekends its different.

  • Keep going!!  You don't have to be done.  Don't let anyone tell you what you should or shouldn't do on this issue!

We made it to about 16 months.  He never pulled on my shirt or demanded anything.  We were down to 2-3 feedings a day, but he started to have no interest whatsoever.  I wasn't ready to stop, but he obviously was :-(

  • I felt exactly the same way at 12mos and honestly, i dont know if i could ever be the one to initiate it.  But at 13mos my kids are beginning to lose interest...we're down to 3 sessions, yesterday there was only 2.  It's bitter-sweet but definitely easier when they make the decision to stop.

  • Yay!  DD is just past 12 months, and we still BF too.  I never thought we'd make it this far.  I don't have a reason to stop either, and I plan to keep going as long as she's interested.

  • Good for you! If you both are enjoying it, just keep going! DD totally lost interest and it broke my heart, b/c I loved the bonding. She was too much of a busy body to want to nurse by about 11.5 months. We did it in the AM's when she woke up till right after her birthday when she'd just nurse for a hot second and then smile and want to get down and play.
  • We are still going strong at 17 months. I thought I'd be totally ready to wean at 12 mos but I wasn't, and he definitely wasn't. He is still sort of addicted and looooves to nurse, so we nurse multiple times a day. He asks for it and does pull on my shirt....we are working on that. I am trying to get it down to wakeup/nap/bedtime but haven't gotten there yet. It is a great bond, and since he still nurses a lot, he doesn't drink much cows milk, so it's still saving us money.

At this point if he was ready to wean, I would be happy to, but we're not there yet. Just go with the flow..as long as you're both happy, that is great! I get some comments too but just try to ignore them. DH, DS and I are all on the same page with it, and that's all that matters.

  • Congrats Mama!!!  We're still going, although we're down to once a day in the morning.  It's nice to be able to wear regular bras again lol!

  • Congrats on making it to one year!  We are doing don't offer/don't refuse.  My dd is down to twice daily and wants to nurse more if she's teething or not feeling well.  If you look up weaning on the kellymom site, they state that children will self-wean somewhere around 2-4.  I feel like I'm ready and hope that she will wean in the next few months and least by the time she's 2...otherwise I may consider helping her along.  I get the same commits about nursing 'til 4...and I just let it go in one ear and out the other.  I am the only one of all my friends still nursing and wish I knew someone who still was.
  • Oh my gosh!  Thanks for all of the encouragement ladies :)  It is so nice to hear that i'm not the only one.
  • I say more power to you. We have not stopped breastfeeding although we have cut back to night and morning feedings. It's a great source of nutrition and it's easy. I hate how people feel the need to comment negatively about it.
  • DD is almost 15 months and we are still going strong. She does not like cow's milk. I work part time and on the days I am home with her I nurse her when she ask for milk or tugs my shirt. I still pump as well so she can have some milk on the days when I have to work because she refuses to drink cows milk.
  • First of all congrats! I think it's wonderful. I wanted to go a year but had to stop around 6-7 months.  Keep going and don't worry about the comments!  :-)

  • Congrats! Still nursing here too!
  • YAY for you for making it that long.  I couldn't breastfeed due to medications but honestly even if I could have there is no way I would have made it a year, that's an excellent milestone.  And whoever is making the comments about you nursing too long they are not his mother therefore it is not their business.
