RP: Need opinions-EP bottle feed to heal nipples

I've been taking a break from nursing to let my nipples heal since Saturday (3 full days now) based on LC recommendation.  I've been wearing hydrogel pads and they help.  Nipples were raw, sore and dry but never cracked or bleeding. The tip was also a lighter color than the rest of the nipple, does this mean I lost a layer of skin as I've heard it referred to?

My LC said to only take a day break but I decided to take a longer break because a day just didn't do it.  I've been EP and bottle feeding LO, she's taken to the bottle like a champ.  I'm thinking about trying to nurse again tomorrow morning.  Our problem was a shallow latch.

So, do you know anything about how long a break can last before LOs will not come back to the breast? Is there such a thing? Also, would you use a nipple shield the first time or try nursing without it and see what happens?

I'm a little nervous.  Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

  • I ep'd for two months and just went back to nursing. DD had no problem going back to breast. My nipples, however, are a different story...but we're getting there. Every baby is different, but I think you should be fine!

  • First of all, make sure your latch is correct, otherwise you'll go back to pumping before you can say OUCH!  If possible, do it in front of a LC.. this way she can correct it right away.

I did have a 7 day break when LO was 3 weeks old b/c i had to go on some major medication and i pump and dumped for that entire time. LO did not want anything to do w/ my boob when i tried nursing again and i just decided to pretty much hold my ground and not give in.. after fussing for several days w/ every feeding he went back to BF but i when he was 4 months old and started biting my nipple i decided to only pump.. so now i pump only. I miss nursing -so much easier!

good luck -it can be done but it all depends on your LO.

WOW! good for you! that's amazing that she went back after two months!  that's very rare though -you have to admit.  like you said, every baby is different. mine fussed like crazy but did go back.
