eye sight

I've heard that you're eyesight can change when you're pregnant.  For those of you that are already mom's is this true?  Does it change back?  I wear contacts basically all the time except first thing in the morning, and right before bed.  So I need to know.  I cannot function without my contacts, and My glasses perscription is a few years old, so thats not a good alternative.  If you're eye sight changed, did it go back?  Was it really noticable?  When did you start to notice it?

  • I have been wondering the same thing!

  • Mine has never changed during pregnancy. My step mothers did when she had her first child but that was in her 40s and I'm sure they were coming anyways (I've had glasses since 3rd grade, she started mid 40s not fair lol).
  • I talked to several moms on a different board and most said it did change, but that it was really weird and fluctuated and to get it checked out after the baby is born because it could go back to normal. If your changes are major, see a dr. You will know when its time.

  • Mine changes every year anyways and I can tell you that the change was a little more pronounced, but not by much.  My eyes have never gotten better or "gone back" like you mentioned.  I am nearly blind without glasses/contacts though, so I might not be the best person to ask.  I think my contacts are a -7.5 or something like that.  I have bad astigmatism in one eye.  I can't even see the big E on the chart without my glasses/contacts!

  • It fluctuates due to fluid retention.  If you need a new pair of glasses and/or new contacts, you might want to get them now before it starts changing.  You'll probably want glasses you're comfortable wearing so that you have an alternative to your contacts (they may become increasingly dry and you may not want to mess with them later).

I know how you feel! I only know the E is there i can't see it at all!  I am legally blind without correction.  I know that legally blind you have to be 20/-200 vision with correction.  Without correction I am 20/-400.  So I pretty much suck at seeing.  lol.

  • i was getting headaches, and i found that i had to pull out an old pair of glasses with a weaker prescription.

this happened to me in my last pregnancy, and it did go back to my 'full strength' prescription shortly after.  im not sure if i had carried to term if it would have gone back, but i think so.

  • I actually just got an eye exam, so I got the scoop from the Dr. Pregnancy does change your eye sight. Usually the changes are unilateral though, so one side is affected more so than the other. The changes also won't return to normal until about 3 months after you stop breastfeeding.

My left eye is actually improving! I was told b/c of this change that I might want to take "breaks" from my glasses sometimes to avoid headaches.
