S/O sippy cups.

If you started to introduce a sippy cup to LO, how are they doing with it? DD will take it sometimes. She has only really taken it once without just chewing the spout and throwing it down. How long did it take for LO to want to drink from it?

Re: S/O sippy cups.

  • DD loves to drink water out of a sippy cup (and a real cup, actually, but I don't let her have that on her own!)  So far I haven't given her anything but water because while she does take sips, she also turns it upside down and spills a lot.  Right now it's just fun for her and that's fine with me.

  • Oh sorry, just realized I didn't really answer your question.  She took to it right away, but she had been very interested in our cups for a while.  Do you have one with two handles?  DD seems to like that one best.  Also, I've noticed she likes the ones that the water basically pours out, if she has to really suck on it she can't get anything and doesn't like it.

  • Summer20, which ones have you found that they pour out?  DD will put it in her mouth & tip back, but doesn't seem to get the idea that she has to suck out of it.  All the ones I've got have the valves that don't really let anything drip from them.

  • We started practicing with the sippy around 5.5 months. I want DD off bottles by about 10 months. So the last few weeks I've been trying to give her at least one of her feedings in a sippy. Well she hasn't really done well with it. I was using Munchkin sippies. Then the other day I bought a Born Free Training Cup and DD took ALL of her feedings today in it! She is doing great. I'm super excited about it.

  • I have the nuby sippy cups with the silicone spouts... the spill proof ones. I guess maybe I should try the regular sippy cups with the hard spout. I thought she would take it easier if it felt similar to a bottle nipple but it seems a little harder to suck out of. Im going to get some new ones and try them out and see how it works. Thanks!

Shihtzumomma - I am going to start weaning LO off of bottles at 10 months. I want her off bottles by the time she turns 1. But I didn't think about feeding DD with a sippy. I think I am going to start doing that.

  • We've been trying sippy cups since 6 months but very infrequently in the beginning... It wasn't until about 2 or 3 weeks ago that she actually started to drink out of one and not just chew on the spout regularly. In the beginning she'd drink a little bit, but dribble most of it out of the sides of her mouth and make a mess!

We've been doing 3/4 water and 1/4 juice for now... We've haven't tried BM in one yet but might try it soon so that she has an easier time weaning at a year from the bottle.

I think it's a Tommee Tippee cup, my sister got it at CVS of all places.  I also have another one that has different options (straw, sippy cup, etc) but I took all the valves out so it's just a cup with a little spout.  Sorry, I don't have either with me right now and can't find them online either.
