Just a mattress. The bed we got him does not need a box spring and it makes it a lot closer to the ground with out one.

  • We started the girls on just a mattress on the floor.  Once they were comfy, we added the box spring for the height but nothing else.  My older DD is going to be getting a trundle bed (hand me down from her cousin) in about a month and that will be the 1st real bed she will have and it is a bit high so we'll keep the trundle open some at first for her.  Her little sister is still on just the mattress and will get the box spring when we get the trundle. She'll get a trundle from my nephew within a year or so.

  • both but no frame
  • Just a mattress.

We have a bed that has a slat system-- if we put a box spring on it, the mattress would be way over the top of the footboard.
